How to Earn the Annointings of the Holy Spirit – Part 1 & 2
LESSON ONE FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT: WHO AND WHAT IS THE HOLY SPIRIT? A lecture by Elizabeth Clare Prophet, held on 6-26-94, from the Heart of the Inner Retreat in Montana.
LECTURE TRANSCRIPT:
I found out that trying to nestle the Holy Spirit in five lectures is absolutely impossible. But what I will endeavor to do is to bring to you the Holy Spirit in the major appearances of that Spirit of God moving in, through and among us from Genesis to Revelation, to give you so much profound insight into this Holy Spirit, the prerequisites to your worthiness to be one with that Holy Spirit, that if you take all of these things and seal them in your hearts, you will be well on your way at the conclusion of this conference to having a daily walking and talking with that Holy Spirit in full confidence that God has ordained your oneness with the Holy Spirit. So we begin at the beginning.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God [that is, the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit of God] moved upon the face of the waters.” Thus we see that the opening verses of Genesis record the presence of the Holy Spirit as integral to the creation, the creation of worlds, universes, the cosmos and, most specifically, you. God is there in the Beginning. God breathes into us as the Holy Spirit the breath of life when we take our first breath and God the Holy Spirit withdraws from us that breath at the hour of our transition.
So the Holy Spirit was with the children of Israel during their exodus and journey through the wilderness to the Promised Land. They followed the Holy Spirit, who manifested as what? We all remember‑-“a pillar of cloud by day,” “a pillar of fire by night.” That was the presence of the Holy Spirit. Claim it for yourself right now, that God is always going before you with that cloud by day, that pillar of fire. That is your protection. Be not superstitious that anything can touch you, for the Holy Spirit is with you.
As Pharaoh and his armies pursued them to the Red Sea, “Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord.” That is a wonderful quote to recite when you have fear about the small and the greater burdens of life and challenges. Fear ye not. Stand still. Don’t tremble and quake and be filled with anxiety and imperil. Stand still and behold and expect the salvation of your God. It is this faith that opens up your heart and lets the Holy Spirit in.
Moses says, “The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” Be still and know that I AM God. That is the message of the Holy Spirit. “Let me do it. I am here to do it for you. I will take care of the adversity, the enemy, your needs, all that you must have to be victorious.”
“And the Lord said unto Moses, Lift thou up thy rod, stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. And the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.”The waters of your human consciousness can be divided. Put one to the one side, one to the other and walk on the dry ground of the Lord and don’t be moved by your emotions. Don’t be moved as things come in upon you and you begin to tremble and shake and say, “Woe is me. What shall happen to me?”
“The children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground. And the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand and on their left. And the Egyptians pursued and went in after them [in] the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots and his horsemen.” No word was forthcoming from the God of Israel to warn Pharaoh. They had no sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.
“In the morning watch, the Lord looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians and took off their chariot wheels that they drave them heavily so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians. [And it was so.] And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea. And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. There remained not so much as one of them.”
Remember the right hand. Remember, when you raise your right hand you are slipping that hand into the hand of God, and God will go for you and work for you and raise you up.
Scripture records the Holy Spirit’s spectacular presence in nature during the Israelites’ sojourn in the wilderness. Two months after the Israelites left Egypt, the Lord said unto Moses: “Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud”‑-a thick cloud. Have you ever been a, in a thick cloud of fog? You couldn’t see through it to the other side?‑-“that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever” ‑-the cloud, the wonderful cloud of the I AM Presence, the cloud of the Holy Spirit.
“And it came to pass that there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the mount and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud so that all the people that were in the camp trembled.” The thick cloud was the presence of the Holy Spirit‑-the medium through which God in the Absolute communed with man in the relative.
So what is the Holy Spirit? A type of mediator, mediating between the absolute intensity of God, the absolute intensity of the sacred fire that would consume us on contact, mediating, then, between that intense, absolute God and the frail human, the imperfect human, the human that has not even found its own immortality in all these centuries of reincarnating.
Then again, in the wilderness the Israelites Korah, Dathan, Abiram and 250 other prominent men challenged the authority of Moses and Aaron and vexed the Holy Spirit. What does it mean to vex the Holy Spirit? It means to deny that Spirit, to cause that Spirit to become angry in the sense of the wrath of God.
To go against the Holy Spirit is the greatest crime there is. The Bible says that you must never swear using the name of the Holy Spirit. People swear using the name of God and the name of Jesus Christ. But that sin of swearing using the name of the Holy Spirit is fraught with gravity and serious karma. So they challenged the authority of Moses and Aaron and vexed the Holy Spirit. You never want to be in that position. Therefore guard your thoughts and feelings and actions.
The judgment of the Holy Spirit fell upon them. Do never, never do anything that will cause the judgment of the Holy Spirit to come upon you. The earth opened up and swallowed up Korah, Dathan and Abiram and their families. Fire descended from heaven‑-it was the fire of the Holy Ghost‑-and consumed the other 250. This is an example of the swift and sudden judgment of the Holy Spirit whuna, when the people have so violated the I AM Presence of their God that divine mercy is no longer an option. Then many thousands of years of accrued karma descends.
You can see thousands of years of accrued karma descending in ancient and recent events, such as A.D. 79. The sudden eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the city of Pompeii. Was it an accident of nature? Of course not. Century upon century upon century these people had been ac, accumulating their karma. And one fine day that karma became top-heavy and so ves, Vesuvius erupted and they were all buried.
August 1992, Hurricane Andrew left 33 dead, 300,000 homeless, 60,000 homes destroyed. The fall ’93 earthquake that rocked central India, 300 miles south of Bombay, east of Bombay, left 30,000 dead or missing and more than 100,000 homeless.
This is the exactitude of the working out of the law of karma, as a man soweth, that shall he also reap. We must remember this and not think that because life just rolls along and we seem to lead a charmed existence that any day there may not come upon us the return of a karma that is ancient, from ten thousand years ago, fifty thousand years ago. The cycles of karma grind slowly but they do grind on.
What can we do? We can decide to get the Holy Spirit and live in accordance with the ordinances of God’s laws and use the violet flame to transmute that past karma before it catches up to us, overtakes us and deprives us of the fulfillment of our mission. We never know when the day dawns what blessings of good karma we have made will come upon us to put the wind in our sails for victory or what negative karma may come down and deprive us of the fruits of our sowings.
When Joshua led Israel, the Spirit of God empowered him as the great warrior captain in m, in Israel’s military campaign to conquer the Promised Land. Under his leadership the Israelites conquered thirty-one powerful rulers in Canaan in just a few short years.
The spectacular events at the battle of Jericho bear witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit in their midst. After the Israelites marched around Jericho, seven priests blew seven trumpets and the people shouted with a great shout. Those priests directed and released the sacred fire of their seven chakras for the leveling of that city, which was a city of sin, a city that must be conquered. The walls of the city fell down flat and they took the city. God, the Mighty I AM Presence, overshadowed Joshua and his men, Archangel Michael came as the Captain of the Lord’s hosts, but it was the Holy Spirit who triggered the action of the victory.
Now you are seeing the Holy Spirit as a facilitator, as a mediator, as a very present help in need, as an essential element in our lives. And as we continue on with this teaching, we will come to understand just what a disciplinarian the Holy Spirit can be. The Holy Spirit demands that we rise to his level. We cannot bring him down to our level. We must rise to his level and in that rising there are things that we will have to dispense with, set aside and say, “I can no longer act in this wise. I can no longer be this kind of person because I know in my heart it is an offense to the Holy Spirit and I do not want to offend the Holy Spirit.” [Messenger gives instruction to A.V. personnel]
Next comes Elijah’s contest with the prophets of Baal. This is always very entertaining for children. They can root for their hero and they can be glad to see his victory. Elijah’s contest is another example of the tangible power of the Lord’s Spirit working through his anointed prophets. The First Book of Kings says, “And Elijah came unto all the people [of Israel], and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.” They answered not a word because Elijah was filled of the Holy Spirit, ordained by God, and they dare not speak out in his presence.
“Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.” Numbers don’t count, do they? They don’t count at all. It is the one that is right that counts, though five million may shout in the other direction.
23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:
24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord [I AM THAT I AM]: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God.
From morning until evening, the priests of Baal called on the name of Baal, but there was no response. In the evening Elijah prayed:
36 Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and…Jacob, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt-sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord [I AM THAT I AM], he is the God; the Lord [I AM THAT I AM], he is the God.
[I Kings 18:23-24, 36-39]
Let’s say it all together: The Lord I AM THAT I AM, he is the God! The Lord I AM THAT I AM, he is the God! The Lord I AM THAT I AM, he is the God!
This, too, was the outworking of the Holy Spirit‑-the Spirit of the I AM THAT I AM‑-that rested on the prophet Elijah. If you serve the Lord your God all of your life in integrity and in purity, that God will rest upon you also. Desire that! Strive for it. Put everything else aside for it and yet know that God wants you to be happy in your families, in your churches, in your schools, in your social activities. We can keep all the commandments of God and have a good time besides.
Elijah would not allow the people to halt between two opinions. He wouldn’t allow them to be wishy-washy and say, “Well, maybe it’s this, maybe it’s that,” in that relative consciousness. He drew a line in the sand and said, “If the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, follow him.” He challenged them to rise above duality and personality, choose the living God and denounce the dead god of Baal.
It is easy for us to take what we want from the living and the dead God to suit our rela, our relative situation ethics. But if we do, we will never be empowered by the Holy Spirit. So make up your mind today whether you want to rewrite the Ten Commandments to give yourself license to do anything or whether you want to walk in this life to the point of your victory and be empowered by that Holy Spirit so that you can do something about the people you meet every day who are sick, who are burdened, who are dying, people all over the world.
Wouldn’t you like to move when you move out of your body at night and minister with the angels in that cloud of the Holy Spirit, to be able to heal and save the children, millions of children, who are dying today of hunger, who are not being cared for, who don’t learn their lessons, who have no future, who are emaciated? When you look at Rwanda, we thought Bosnia was the ultimate, but look at Rwanda. And here we sit.
And what is the matter with us? What is the matter with us is that all of us need to sacrifice to get the Holy Spirit so that when we work out of the body or in our prayers they are effective and evil in the earth is bound and the seed of the wicked are bound. We cannot just have the knowledge of the Law and the knowledge of the Teachings of the Ascended Masters and give our decrees for our own pet projects and this and that and a very private walk with God that is self-centered.
We need to know that we have the Teachings of the Ascended Masters because the Ascended Masters need vessels to bring people out of their misery and tie them back to the reality of that Christ-flame, that God-flame. We can’t go half the way in this Community. We have to go all the way, deciding that we are not an exception. No one is an exception! Everyone can receive the Holy Spirit if he is willing to meet the requirements.
The Holy Spirit is an all-or-nothing proposition. And the Father-Mother God, the Son and the Holy Spirit demand 100 percent of your love and obedience. And you will find such joy in living, you will never again think that living by the laws of God puts you in some kind of puritanical straitjacket. Nothing of the kind is true. The Holy Spirit is a great liberator. I am a free spirit!
How many people here today are free spirits? [“I am!”]
Be sure you can say, “I am.” Be sure you can say, “I’m a free spirit.”
Are you truly free from the bondage of your own psychology, your own karma? Are you free from all of the shackles of this world? Are you free from your ego? Are you really a free spirit? [responses] Or do you do what the world wants you to do and go with the trends of the world?
Search your heart! When, when thoughts come to you regarding this, write them down in the pad you’re writing on and keep writing and tell yourself how much of a prisoner you are and how much of a free spirit you are.
God made you to be a free spirit, to kowtow to no one! You have to say or when you can say to the one God, “I will have no other gods before you‑-including my ego self,” then you will be well on your way to oneness with the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit was upon the prophet Elisha when he brought the dead son of the Shunammite woman back to life. Entering the room where the child was, he shut the door and prayed to the Lord. He kept everybody out‑-nobody’s doubts, nobody’s fears, nobody’s wailing. He entered in and he shut the door and he prayed. He was alone with this child. Then he performed a mighty alchemy. He laid himself upon the boy, putting his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, his hands upon his hands, his chakras upon his chakras.
As Elisha lowered himself unto the boy, the child’s flesh grew warm. Again he laid upon the boy and the child sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. That’s the kind of miracle you want to be the instrument of. You are not the doer; you are the chalice, the instrument of healings such as these when you make yourself ready.
Now we turn to Jesus’ life‑-it is a study in his oneness with the Holy Spirit. He, the Son of God, was never separate from the three Persons of the Trinity. God confirmed the presence of the Holy Ghost with him by signs appearing. And each test the Father and the Holy Spirit gave him he fulfilled so that we, his disciples, might take from his example and pass the same tests that Jesus passed.
Don’t think about Jesus being tempted in the wilderness as an isolated experience. You have to go through that temptation, and sometimes many times over.
Jesus comes “from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him. John forbids him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? Jesus answered, sai, sayn, Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.”
What Mark Prophet al, always taught was that John the Baptist was the reincarnation of the prophet Elijah. Jesus Christ was the reincarnation of Elisha. They had a long, established Guru-chela relationship, Master-disciple relationship. But in this case Jesus is saying, John the Baptist is saying, “I must decrease and he must increase.” In this lifetime John the Baptist went before Jesus to proclaim him as the Lord and Saviour of the Piscean age. It is a beautiful thing.
And so, when John says, “I need to be baptized of thee,” Jesus says, “Suffereth it to be so now.” They understand that hierarchical relationship where John the Baptist was his Guru and in this life John will recede as Jesus comes to the fore.
So here it is baptism at the age of twenty-nine or thirty. He “went up straightway out of the water: and…the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Holy Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” I always interpret this “in whom I am well pleased” as God is saying, “In whom I AM. I dwell in this Jesus and in that dwelling within him I am pleased with his state of consciousness.” Here the Holy Spirit and the Father confirmed him as the Son of God and of God incarnate.
That is an initiation that you can look forward to and prepare for, that wondrous initiation of hearing that divine approbation. It is not exclusive to Jesus. Every word Jesus spoke, everything he did was that you might go and do likewise, but not of your human self but of your own real, Christed Self.
The Holy Spirit was with Jesus for his next test. We read in Luke, “Jesus, being full of the Holy Ghost, was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being forty days tempted of the devil.” You know that forty is a recurring number in the Old Testament. It is more symbolic than always actual.
God will allow the Devil to test us just as he allowed him to test Jesus. We must pass these tests! We must anticipate them. We must know that they will come. We know what the tests of life are. They’re very basic. You don’t simply go through life la-di-da and the test descends upon you because this is the day for your exam and you haven’t prepared, you haven’t thought about it, you haven’t even considered that you will have such a great challenge.
And you know what? Sometimes God tests us again and again, even if we pass our tests each and every time. And that’s because God has the right to test our mettle. We have the right to be tested again and again because we want to see where we are on the path of life. To prove we are not waning in our love for him and our resolve to keep his commandments, he does that. He keeps on testing us because until we are ascended in the Light and free we are not free from the temptations of the flesh.
After this Jesus “returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee” and he taught in the synagogues. “As his custom was, he went into the synagogue [in Nazareth] on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” These are the words of Isaiah and this is the commission that God gave to Isaiah. But he gave the same commission to Jesus. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me” for a reason: “Because he hath anointed me, number one, (write it down) to preach the gospel to the poor.” The poor are those who do not understand the teachings of the path of God so they need to be preached to, they need to be given that teaching.
He hath, this is number two, “He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted.” Healing the brokenhearted is something you will hear more about from our experts in psychology who will be lecturing here, how to heal those who suffer and who mourn, how to heal those who simply cannot pick up the pieces of their lives and move on because they have been through such sorrow or such brutalizing or such torment.
Three, “to preach deliverance to the captives.” Captives of what? Those who are enslaved in their bodies but those who are enslaved in their nyne, in their minds also, enslaved by ignorance.
Four, “recovering of sight to the blind,” the blind who cannot see God, the blind that cannot see the error of their own ways. They are blind because they have not been taught.
“To set at liberty them that are bruised”‑-bruised, burdened, bowed down, mistreated.
Six, “to preach the acceptable year of the Lord,” the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, that is, repent and be saved because the Lord is coming.
“He closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister and sat down. And the eyes of all of them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”
Thus the prophecy of God to Isaiah is fulfilled in Isaiah. Hundreds of years later it is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. And now at the turn of the Aquarian age it must be fulfilled in you. God has called upon you to do these six things. Please do not take the Bible as something ancient that has no relevancy to today. Many souls will be lost if we don’t step into the mantle of our calling. Today Jesus calls us to the baptismal fount of the Holy Spirit that we also may accept our role in fulfilling these promises.
Later, after this public event, when the turbulent sea was threatening to overtake his boat, Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit. He rebuked the great wind and said to the sea, “Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” Thus, by the power of the Holy Spirit and the authority of his Sonship, Jesus commanded the elements and the elemental, the elementals, the Nature spirits. He commanded them to obey him and they did.
By the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus exorcised a legion of unclean spirits from the Gadarene demoniac. The spirits entered into a herd of two thousand swine, who ran off a cliff into the sea and drowned. Casting out demons out of animals, out of people, out of the human body that is defiled is another work of the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit will work that work through you when you are ready.
Always one with the Father and the Holy Spirit, Jesus raised from the dead the twelve-year-old daughter of Jairus, one of the rulers of the synagogue. The people at Jairus’s house, who were weeping and wailing, were astonished. Jesus had the Holy Spirit’s power to raise the dead by reigniting the threefold flame, breathing upon them the breath of life and commanding the spirit of the deceased to reenter the body temple.
Jesus spoke of the power of the Holy Ghost as rivers of living water. The Gospel of John says, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” “He was speaking of the [Holy] Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for the [Holy] Spirit had not yet been given [to the disciples] because Jesus had not yet been glorified.”
What is the belly? The belly is the place of the solar-plexus chakra. It is the place of the sun, the place of peace, the place of pure desire. When we have the Sun shining, the Sun of the I AM prese, Presence shining in that chakra, when we maintain peace, when we purify ourselves of wrong desire, then we can become one with the Prince of Peace. His healing to the nations will flow out of your solar plexus as rivers of living water.
When Jesus sent forth the apostles to preach and heal, he told them that the Holy Spirit would be with them, “And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the [Holy] Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.” My friends, as disciples of Jesus, let us accept that promise for today and know that God has ordained that the Holy Spirit speak through us also.
Jesus promised his apostles before his crucifixion that the Holy Spirit, whom he called the Comforter, would come to them. He said, “I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. Even the Spirit of Truth [the Holy Spirit of Truth]; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” All the foul spirits, the lower spirits, the lower orders of spirits and demons must be exorcised from you so that you create a temple that the Holy Spirit may live in twenty-four hours a day.
“The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have [told] you.” “When the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of Truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.”
“It is expedient for you that I go away.” There are many reasons for this. If Jesus had stayed with the disciples forever, they would have been dependent upon him. They now had to become all that he taught them that they could be. Further, “If I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you.” The age was turning. The cycles were turning. Jesus Christ had been with him. They knew in the previous da, dispensation the power of the presence of the I AM THAT I AM. Now they were entering the period of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus says, “But if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment.” Three things he will reprove the world of: sin, righteousness and judgment. “Of sin, because they believe not on me.” Isn’t it the greatest sin of all that the living Saviour has come, is here still, always will be, but they believe not? “Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more.” There is the righteousness of men, which may be self-righteousness, and then there is the righteousness of God. And that righteousness is the right use of God’s Law. “Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you into all Truth.”
Jesus made other key promises to his apostles before he left the Palestinian scene. At the Last Supper he said, “If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him and we will come unto him and make our abode with him.” This means that the Mighty I AM Presence, your own individualized God Self, and your Holy Christ Self will dwell in your temple because you love him and keep his words.
How many people say to me, “My Holy Christ Self told me to do this or that but I didn’t do it.” People say that to me matter-of-factly. The most precious contact you have with the living God is your Holy Christ Self.
Why does your Holy Christ Self give you direction? Why does your Holy Christ Self comfort you, teach you, warn you? Because the Holy Christ Self is your Teacher. And if you keep that state of listening grace, listening with one ear to your Holy Christ Self and obey the Holy Christ Self, you will have many shortcuts in life. You will not have to go all the way around Robin Hood’s barn to find the door.
But moreover, the Holy Spirit is testing you. [Messenger instructs A.V. personnel] The Holy Spirit is testing you to see that you will be obedient at every juncture when he speaks to you. When you can guarantee that you will respond to the Holy Christ Self and keep yourself in the God-flame and in your tube of light so that you are not mistaking foul spirits for the Holy Christ Self, then the Holy Christ Self can teach you more, can empower you, can release increments of light to you. [Messenger gives instruction to A.V. personnel; pause]
I ask you to begin exercising this immediately and never stop till the hour of your victory, listening to the inner voice of God within you and obeying that voice. There are times when you can be tired, when you can be sick, when you can be weak and then is when the voices of foul spirits, lower astral entities, will start speaking to you and telling you all kinds of nonsensical things.
When you are in an unbalanced state physically and you do not have your strength, you do not have your light centered in your chakras, you are not centered in your I AM Presence, then these foul spirits may come along and really wreak havoc with your consciousness. They can tell you to commit suicide, to jump out the window, to do all kinds of crazy things.
And this is the place where if people ke, continue listening to the wrong spirits and not to their Holy Christ Self because they’re incapable of reaching the level of the Holy Christ Self, that that is where they go off the deep end and ultimately are entertaining so many spirits that they need to be o, on medication. But then they do not take the medication because their spirits tell them not to take the medication. And so, it’s a very dangerous place to be, to be off-centered, to be off-centered, to not have the balance in your four lower bodies so that you are attuned at all times with your Holy Christ Self.
Others tune in to foul spirits by the desire to be channels at psychic levels. They are not empowered by the Holy Spirit. And only if you have the Holy Spirit can you deliver accurately the Teachings of the Ascended Masters or what the Holy Christ Self of anyone is saying.
So this is the danger of the Path and this is why El Morya saw to it that I introduce to the Community the basic macrobiotic diet, which establishes balance in the organs, balance in the mind, the body and makes you strong, have the sacred fire in your chakras, have your ch’i, have your energy and not be weak and limp so that you cannot even maintain the Light of God in your body temple. Often those people who become deranged and psychologically ill and not able to function normally in society, all they need is a correction of their diet, right diet, and the willingness to stop talking to discarnate entities.
Jesus says, “He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: yet the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” On the way to the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus told the apostles, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth [much] fruit and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye…ask the Father in my name, he may give it you.”
This is a very important principle in the Master-disciple relationship. We do not choose the Master but the Master chooses us. We may say we’ve been a chela of El Morya’s for many years, but the question is, has he chosen us to be his chela? We don’t choose the Master; the Master chooses us. And he chooses us when we qualify ourselves.
And the most fundamental qualification that you have to have to have an a, Ascended Master sponsor you is dependability. Dependability. Are you a chela one day and something else the next? Can the Master depend on you night and day because you have your equilibring, your equilibrium and you are not moved from it?
And constantly in the back of your mind is the sense, “I’m a chela of El Morya. And if I’m not one now, by golly, I’m determined to be one and I’m determined to be one to serve this Master, to do the work that he needs to have done. And I have the hands and feet and I have the mouth. And therefore I will apprentice myself to El Morya until the day comes when he will be compelled to take me as a chela because I have fulfilled the matrix, the mold of the pattern of his disciples.” So we need to earn the right by the Holy Spirit to become disciples of Jesus or anyone.
The words of David come to mind apropos this very point. He prayed, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.”
At this point let us sing a few songs to the Holy Spirit and while we are singing let us tune in to a new level of oneness to the Holy Spirit, which you are already gaining.
Jesus made a promise to his disciples. Let no one here doubt that Jesus keeps his promises. And this is what he said and this promise is to every disciple of his, past, present and future. “Whatsoever ye…ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name. Ask, and ye shall receive [and] your joy may be full.”
This is such a wondrous promise, I want you to take advantage of it right now. Ask whatever you will of the Father in Jesus’ name. Ye shall receive it, that your joy may be full. I ask that you engage is, in the deepest heartfelt prayer now to God the Father, Mother, the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus. Together. [personal calls given] And now accept it.
This is the way in which you might pray: In the name Jesus Christ, the Son of God, I beseech the Father and the Holy Spirit, working with him, to do this thing which I ask. And let it be done according to thy will, O God.
After his resurrection, Jesus made another promise to the apostles. He said, “Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” “For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” That is a promise for you, not only the apostles. Make yourself worthy. Say, “Lord, thou art worthy. Make me worthier still.”
The apostles and lesser disciples and holy women would go nowhere in their world ministry without being endued with power from on high. There are probably many days in your life when you feel absolutely powerless against the horrendous things that are happening in the world or just in your own household. When you feel that way, you need to call for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and for the Holy Spirit to teach you what you must do to receive it. As I said earlier, what a waste our lives would be if we should have all of this teaching of the Ascended Masters and yet pass from the screen of life powerless to move mountains and to help this world be righted.
No amount of human striving or breast-beating, no doctrine or dogma or formula could guarantee the mission of the apostles and the lesser disciples and the holy women. Only their love for the Father-Mother God, a love that is in action every day, for the Holy Spirit and the Lord Jesus and their obedience to all commandments of God would assure them that the Holy Spirit would empower them not many days hence in the city of Jerusalem.
I see Pentecost as their final exam after having been with the Master for three years. They could not study for this exam. It was all in their heart and their oneness with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Now it would be made plain‑-whom Jesus had chosen and whom he had not chosen.
So we read in Acts 2:
1 When the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled.
[Acts 2:1-7]
Peter went on to address the crowd, witnessing to the works of Jesus and his crucifixion and resurrection.
37 When they heard [his words], they were pricked in their heart, and [they] said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy [Spirit].
39 For the promise is unto you, and...your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
[Acts 2:37-41]
I want you to know that if you have not been baptized in Church Universal and Triumphant, I will c, receive you at the conclusion of our conference. Remember the two requirements: repent of your sins and be cleansed by baptism.
So this is a wondrous thing that was instituted in the very early chapters of the gospel, that Jesus himself was baptized. He went through the ritual so that you could understand this is not a mental exercise. Baptism is a symbolic and actual ritual of the cleansing of your being from karma, sin and every out-of-alignment state. You, working with the Holy Spirit, can receive a tremendous blessing through baptism.
Now I want to tell you about one of my favorite saints and yours, Saint Stephen. He was “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,” who did “great wonders and miracles among the people.” The Book of Acts says that the Jews who debated him “were not able to resist the wisdom and the Holy Spirit by which he spake.” So they found some men to accuse him falsely. They arrested him and brought him before the Sanhedrin. “And his face appeared to them like the face of an angel.”
Stephen delivered an eloquent and moving sermon. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he had a vision and said aloud, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.” At this, the members of the council became infuriated. They stopped their ears and stoned him. The witnesses laid their clothes down at the feet of a young man by the name of Saul, who consented to the murder.
Saint Stephen is counted among the greatest of Christian martyrs. His shining example allows us to contemplate the fullness of the Holy Spirit to which we may attain. Truly God has reserved the gifts of the Holy Spirit to any and all who will purify their hearts, love God and keep his commandments.
Sometimes I tell people to pray to God when they are in their misery and their most profound burdens. And they say to me, “I don’t feel l, like I can pray to God or pray to El Morya because I’ve been angry at God, I’ve been angry at El Morya.” And so I say, “God doesn’t look at one hour or one moment but over all of your past incarnations for fifty thousand years to the present. God examines your record. God will always receive the prayers of those who are penitent.”
To think that we cannot pray to God because we have sinned is a diabolical lie of the Devil, to think that we cannot have the Holy Spirit because we have done something wrong. Earth is a schoolroom. We make mistakes. We have to get up one more time than we fall and keep on going. Remember this. God is ready to receive your prayer right now. If you don’t offer it, you’re not creating the tie that will bind you to him forever.
Saul, set on destroying the Christian church, arrested men and women and sent them to prison‑-until he too was touched by the Holy Spirit. Imagine this one who became the greatest apostle of Christ consenting and not preventing the stoning of this Saint Stephen. If, if Saul could become Paul and go on to become such an apostle, please accept God’s forgiveness today and set your path on a right course and keep it there.
While Saul was walking on the road to Damascus, a light from heaven suddenly shone all around him. Was Jesus moved because he consented to the death of Saint Stephen, a serious crime, he is an accomplice to a murderer? No. As long as you have life and breath in this world, you have opportunity to receive the fullness of God’s grace. Stop the condemnation and get on with the Holy Spirit.
This was a blinding light and a purging light that fell upon Saul. It was the light of conversion that set him on his own personal walk with Jesus. Remember, the power of conversion is the Holy Spirit. We can’t convert anyone, but the Holy Spirit working through us will do the converting. Conversion means to turn around, to turn around one who is walking away from the Sun of their I AM Presence and set them on the course back to the heart of God.
Jesus cries out to him with a most profound plea of his being, “Saul, Saul, why percu, persecutest thou me? Why persecutest thou me?” Because Saul was persecuting Jesus in the person of Saint Stephen and all of the early Christians. And then he says to him, “It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks,” pricks of conscience, pricks of the Holy Spirit. How long will ya, you go against the Word of God who is speaking to your soul?
“And [Paul] trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise,…go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.” The men who were with Saul brought him to Damascus “and he was three days without sight,…neither did eat nor drink.” He had been blinded by the light of Jesus Christ. No longer again would he see through the eyes of a persecutor.
The Lord instructed a disciple named Ananias to “go into the street which is called Straight” and enquire “for one called Saul of Tarsus. And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on [Saul] said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight and be filled with the Holy Ghost.”
This one, Ananias, apparently has the Holy Spirit and was the instrument of Saul’s receiving his sight and being baptized. And the one baptized waxed strong in the Lord, and by his zeal in the Lord became a mighty apostle of greater renown than his baptizer. “And immediately there fell from [Saul’s] eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith and arose and was baptized.”
Through the con, through the conversion of the Holy Spirit, Saul received the name Paul and he became the greatest apostle of Christ and set about converting the Gentiles and building Christ’s Church. Something had turned Saul around backwards, counterclockwise. He had the mettle. He had the material. Jesus knew him from many ages past. There was no mistake. Saul had virtue in his being but the virtue was misdirected.
How many times do we see misdirected people in this world who need to be redirected and yet can’t do it themselves? We can’t do it either. It is the Holy Spirit that will turn them around. You never know how many lives anyone has lived as a saint only to become someone of ill repute or of dishonesty in this life, when that person will receive the Holy Spirit and go back on track and have his victory.
I correspond with people in prison who have committed murder who study our teachings and give our decrees faithfully and how profoundly grieved they are that they are in jail and not here in this tent today. We think that anyone who has committed a murder must be an evil, evil person. People commit murders in drunken stupors, they do all kinds of things and then they pay the price for decades. Yet, inside that person is a spirit, is a spark that will come through it all in this life or the next and may be an apostle greater than any of us.
The apostles showed many signs and wonders of the Holy Spirit. The Book of Acts records that “God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul.” Listen to this. People touched Paul with handkerchips, with handkerchiefs or aprons and took them to the sick; they in turn were cured, and evil spirits came out of them.
On one occasion Paul raised a young man from the dead. Then while Paul was preaching, the young man went to sleep, fell from a loft and was killed. “Paul went down and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.” When Paul went back upstairs “and had broken bread and eaten and talked a long while, even till [the] break of day, so he departed. And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.”
Did Paul doubt that this man was raised from the dead? He had no doubt whatsoever. He engaged in conversation, had a meal and so forth, and by the time he left, the young man was restored.
Thus the Holy Spirit gave to the apostles the power to raise the dead. And we have the promise, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” That’s the promise of Jesus to you. Don’t stand still, don’t be satisfied till you can perform the greater works. It’s possible because Jesus comes to your temple and works with you.
When Peter and John were on their way to the temple for prayers one evening, the Holy Spirit healed a crippled man through them. We read in Acts, “And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple, [and this temple was] called [the temple] Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.”
There’s a great key in that alchemy. For this man to look into the eyes of the apostles was to establish a connection by which the flow of the Holy Spirit that was upon the apostles came through the apostles’ eyes and was anchored in this man who needed healing.
“And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk!” Remember Jesus’ promise, “Ask in my name and the Father will do it.” The apostles took that h, that promise seriously. They took it seriously and they said “in the name of Jesus Christ” each time they prayed.
“And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered with them into the temple, walking and leaping and praising God.”
If it is the gift of healing that you seek from the Holy Spirit, if you are already health practitioners of one sort or another, I tell you, you must have surrendered all desire for money and things, possessions and possessiveness. God, who freely gives the gift of healing to those who qualify for it, will also supply your daily needs.
The disciple Philip, empowered by the Holy Spirit, performed many miracles in Samaria. “The people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them. And many taken with palsies and that were lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.”
But in that city there was a sorcerer named Simon who had previously bewitched the people of Samaria, convincing them that, that he had the “great power of God.” Simon, too, was converted by Philip and he “wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.”
Then Peter and John traveled to Samaria. “When they were come down, [Peter and John] prayed for the [Samaritans], that they might receive the Holy Ghost. Then laid they, then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
“But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God [or in the Holy Spirit]. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
“Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.” It doesn’t say that he prayed that he might be exorcised of the greed of money but pray that these consequences of my wrong state will not come upon me. “And [so] they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.”
There is a very wondy, wonderful turning point in the ministry of the apostles. It happened at the house of Cornelius in Caesarea. The Holy Spirit came upon the Gentiles gathered there. They were not Jews, but Gentiles. Peter was delivering a sermon there, telling the Gentiles, “God is no respecter of persons. But in every nation, he that feareth him and worketh righteousness is accepted with him.”
While Peter was still preaching, “the Holy Ghost fell on all of them which heard the word.” This is first time that non-Jews are able to receive the Holy Spirit through the apostle, the apostle Peter. “And they of the circumcision which believed [that is, the Jews] were astonished because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.
“Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.” That was the day when the opportunity for that direct discipleship unto Jesus Christ passed from the Jews to the entire Gentile world.
The Lord delivered through the prophet Joel his promise of the descent of the Holy Spirit in a future time. I believe that that time is come, is overdue and is here right now today, the time of the descent of the Holy Spirit! [13-second applause] Praise God.
These are the wonderful words of Joel that we have heard read to us since we were on our mother’s knee. “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit.” None are excluded. No matter what station in life, all have access to the Holy Spirit. We have come to this conference to learn how to access that Holy Spirit.
Today we are on the cusp of the age of Aquarius. I believe that in the age of Aquarius both the Holy Spirit and the Divine Mother are to relea, are to reveal themselves tangibly in the lives of the common people. In the pre-dawn hours of the age of Aquarius, we have begun to see the Spirit “being poured out upon all flesh” as both the Holy Spirit and the Divine Mother have come to the fore.
At another time I will review the movement of the Holy Spirit in the Christian churches in this century through the Pentecostal and charismatic movements as part of my next four lectures. A Holy Spirit renewal was moving across the land in the 1950s. In 1952, coinciding with this movement of the Holy Spirit, the Ascended Master El Morya began preparing Mark L. Prophet to be his Messenger. In 1958, El Morya called Mark Prophet to found The Summit Lighthouse in Washington, D.C. He charged him with the mission to deliver the Teachings of the Ascended Masters for the Aquarian age. Mark Prophet had received the Holy Spirit at a very young age. As a teenager he received all nine gifts of the Spirit.
Don’t mind the wind! That’s the Maha Chohan. [laughter, 11-second applause] I asked him if he would still the wind. He said, “No. I want the wind there so everyone can feel what it was like on Pentecost when the wind of the Holy Spirit descended.” [12-second applause] And I said, “But I don’t have the strength to maintain talking this loud for four hours.” [laughter] He said, “I’ll give you the strength.” [laughter, 12-second applause]
Amazingly, in doing some research on the life of Mark Prophet, we recently found out from a woman at a Pentecostal church in Chippewa Falls, the town where Mark Prophet was born, that Mark spoke in tongues while he attended that Pentecostal church as a teenager. Thus our Church today, which grew out of The Summit Lighthouse, was built squarely upon the presence of the Holy Spirit that was with Mark Prophet.
It is this Spirit and this mantle of the Holy Ghost that the Ascended Masters would transfer us through our founder, the Ascended Master El Morya, and his Messenger Mark L. Prophet. If we follow El Morya and Mark Prophet in the footsteps of Christ and his apostles, Buddha and his disciples, we will receive the apex of the Teachings of the Ascended Masters and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which are ours to claim.
This conference is all about you and the Holy Spirit. That’s what it’s all about, you individually and your unity with the Holy Spirit. I ask you to dedicate yourselves to becoming the vessels of the Holy Spirit during this ten-day class. [13-second applause] Let God remold you in his image and likeness. Let him take the clay and remold it. Let him bring you to that turning around.
Too many of you have waited too long, have been tormented too long and burdened with your private problems and situations or condemned yourself for so long that you’ve practically whipped yourselves to death in self-condemnation. We can be free of all that. That is not God’s will for us. That is the work of the Devil that whispers in your ear and says, “You’re not worthy.” But God says, “Thou are worthy. Thou art worthy.”
I want to tell you that the Comforter, sent by the Father in Jesus’ name, has led some Christians to a wonderful discovery, one that we could hardly imagine they would have come to. They have come to the realization that the Holy Spirit is a person! They walk and talk with the Holy Spirit on a daily basis.
It’s very interesting that many ch, Christians conceive of the Holy Spirit as a personal friend and talk about him that way. Because in so doing, without realizing it, they are accepting an Ascended Master apart from Jesus Christ. Isn’t that wonderful? [6-second applause] [unintelligible] wonderful.
Some Christian ministers and authors describe what the Person of the Holy Spirit is like from their perspective. They declare he is a person who has a personality. That’s true. They describe him as someone who has his own will. He feels, perceives, responds and speaks. He is not weak. He is mighty and powerful, yet gentle and childlike. He is tender and sensitive and gets hurt.
Some Christians affirm that the Holy Spirit longs for our affection and fellowship. He stays close to those who love him and wants a central place in our hearts. He wants to be our dearest friend. He yearns for a daily, ongoing, personal communion and lifelong relationship with us. He has great concern for us and is waiting for us to meet him personally. He is full of surprises. Some perceive him as an active person who never stops working.
What is the Holy Spirit? Is he a Spirit without form? Is he a person? Is he both?
We talk about and we pray to the entire Spirit of the Holy Spir, of the Great White Brotherhood, to the entire Spirit of the Great White Brotherhood. This means the entire Holy Spirit of the Great White Brotherhood. Now let’s explore what that means because this is the ascen, Ascended Masters’ teaching, not the Christians’ teaching. It means we drink of the cup of the Holy Spirit that is uniquely expressed by every member of the Brotherhood.
This means that El Morya has a very specific and peculiar expression of the Holy Spirit. Paul the veniti, Paul the Venetian has another unique aspect of the Holy Spirit that we identify with him. You can name numberless numbers of saints robed in white throughout the cosmos. Each one of them has an individuality in the Holy Spirit that characterizes them, characterizes the Holy Spirit and lets us understand the identification of who and what they are vis-à-vis the Holy Spirit.
Now, you take the entire Mystical Body of God in heaven and on earth, you put all of us together, each of us having a unique, precious something which expresses the Holy Spirit, you put it all together as one body and that’s the Holy Spirit in an impersonal sense of the word.
As you know, the Great White Brotherhood is a, a spiritual order of Western saints and Eastern masters. These adepts are known as the Ascended Masters because they’ve mastered time and space and their karma and achieved union with God through the ritual of the ascension.
Every Ascended Master, as I just said, has an individual identity bearing a unique profile of the Holy Spirit. Many of you who have listened to the dictations for many, many years know almost before the Master starts speaking, if you haven’t been told who it is beforehand, who the Master is because you feel his aura, you feel his vibration and you know that quality of the Holy Spirit that belongs to Saint Germain, to Maitreya, to Gautama. You can always tell if you don, if you didn’t know. That’s that special profile of the Holy Spirit that they carry. You have a special profile. You need to develop it.
Every Ascended Master comes clothed in the mantle of the Holy Spirit. No Ascended Master, of course, is without it. The way a Master manifests the Holy Spirit reflects his specific attainment on the Path. In previous lifetimes what did he major in? What did he do? What was he an expert in? How did he qualify the Holy Spirit?
Stop and think now. What single quality of the Holy Spirit comes to mind when you think of the Ascended Master Saint Germain? El Morya? Jesus Christ? Kuan Yin? Why, Kuan Yin’s aspect of the Holy Spirit is as different as night and day from El Morya’s. Then there’s Krishna. Then there’s Elijah. Then there’s the blessed Mother, Mary. We all know them so personally, and this is why. It is their specific personification of the virtues of the Holy Spirit.
The quality or virtue you think of when you meditate on a particular Master gives you a sense of the personality of the Holy Spirit as it manifests in that Master. So then they comes down to, welf, “Well, if I need a certain thing, I know that this Ascended Master really has a tremendous power on this momentum. So I will seek the Holy Spirit through that Master and give his decrees and give his songs and give devotions to him.”
Every Ascended Master, angel and servant of God, including you and me, has a developing personality of the Holy Spirit. Each one of you embodies a unique aspect of the Holy Spirit. Think now in your heart which is, what is the very best virtue that you think you have and think about building your aspect of the Holy Spirit upon that element that comes so easily to you, whether it’s kindness, it’s compassion, it’s leadership, it’s the quality of being artistic, qualities of God.
Even if this element of your being is but a seed that has not begun to germinate, your outpicturing of the Holy Spirit is different from another’s. You have not, you may not have fully realized that Holy Spirit but it is emerging from within you as you walk the Path, as you give your decrees, as your heart unfolds, as you find you have so many things in your heart you can give to others. One day that seed potential we become, it will become a mighty tree.
So then, when you give your decrees, when you call to “the entire Spirit of the Great White Brotherhood” in every decree you, you are giving, you are calling to the combined manifestations of the Holy Spirit of the Mystical Body of God ascended and unascended. You’re accessing all of that light and momentum that is melded into one because we are one body, one Mystical Body of God.
When one person in the Mystical Body of God does not express his special quality of the Holy Spirit, the entire Body of God is deprived of that special quality. So don’t hide your light under a bushel. You have a quality to contribute, and no one else can do that because it is your specific, unique gift. This knowledge should give to you an understanding that there is no such thing as self-worthlessness. We all have ultimate worth because only we can contribute to the one Mystical Body that essential something that is ours uniquely to develop and offer.
So don’t let the fallen angels tempt you to believe that you’re no good and not of any worth and life’s not worth living because you’re not useful to anyone. Get on track. Figure out what is that quality that you can develop and love to develop because you love the quality.
Now then, one Ascended Master holds the office of representative of the Holy Spirit for the earth. He is known as the Maha Chohan. He is an individual Ascended Master. Maha means “great” in Sanskrit. Chohan means “Lord” in Tibetan. The Maha Chohan is the persifica, is the personification of the Third Person of the Trinity. This does not mean that he is the Holy Spirit, but that he of all Ascended Masters most ably represents the Holy Spirit as we enter the age of Aquarius.
You can see a great council meeting taking place. You can see many, many, many Ascended Masters gathered and God proposing the Maha Chohan of playing this role at the dawn of the age of Aquarius. And you can see the Ascended Masters all agreeing that they feel best represented by this Master because he contains something of each one of them and can properly represent them.
Neither is he the only Ascended Master who has the Holy Spirit, but he is the one whom our Father-Mother God has anointed to represent the Holy Spirit at this period of earth’s history. So you can see there is a general presence, a general personification or an impersonal personification of the Holy Spirit throughout the earth. Yet the focal point of its release and its disciplines come through this Ascended Master.
The Maha Chohan embodies the aspect of the Holy Spirit that God desires the earth to have at this time. He had put hims-, -self through great disciplines to be able to meet the needs of the people of the Holy Spirit at this turning point of the age. He most perfectly embodies the Holy Spirit, as Jesus most perfectly embodies the Christ-flame and the person of the Son of God, just as Gautama most perfectly embodies the seed of Buddha and just as Krishna most perfectly embodies the Atman, or divine spark, that gives the potential of eternal life.
One reason God chose the Maha Chohan as representative of the Holy Spirit is, as I said, all Ascended Masters felt they were best represented through him. Now, think of that. Think of being chosen to this office. Think how remarkable is this being whom we know and love as the Maha Chohan, that through the sacred fire of the Holy Ghost he could personify each precious flame of the numberless numbers of saints in heaven who gather at the throne of the Lamb. Thus, through him we have access to each one’s individual spiritual attainment of the Holy Spirit. You can think of the cosmic computer of the Mind of God. We need to enhance a certain quality of our being, we go to the Maha Chohan and he releases that to us as we are able.
To qualify for the office of representative of the Holy Spirit, the Maha Chohan became an adept on each of the seven rays and accrued to his Causal Body greater attainment than we can even know. The Holy Spirit acts like a prisn, a prism that refracts the white light of the Universal Christ into the seven color rays. Each of the seven rays activates the Light of God on a specific color and frequency. Each ray can also manifest as a flame of the same color and vibration. The application of the flame results in a specific action of the Holy Spirit.
Each of the seven rays is ensouled by an Ascended Masters, an Ascended Master who teaches the way of self-mastery on that particular ray. He embodies, outpictures and sets the example of the action of the Holy Spirit of that ray. The Masters are the Seven Lords, or Chohans. The Maha Chohan is the Great Lord and presides over them and is their teacher. The Seven Chohans in the order of the rays, as you know, are El Morya, Lord Lanto, Paul the Venetian, Serapis Bey, Hilarion, Lady Master Nada and Saint Germain. You can read about them in my book Lords of the Seven Rays.
Now let’s talk about how we view the Maha Chohan. What is he really like as a person?
His embodiment in ancient Greece as the poet Homer gives us some insight into this “human” personality. In his epic the Odyssey, Homer steps into the role of Odysseus when he tells the story of three people: his twin flame, the Greek goddess Pallas Athena, who is an Ascended Lady Master; his soul mate, Penelope; and himself.
In the Odyssey, Pallas Athena says of o, Odysseus, bearing in mind now that it is Homer who is writing this story about himself as Odysseus, “Of all men you are the best in plots and story telling. Always the same detachment, coolheaded, quick, well-spoken.”
Here are some further profiles of his personality, the personality in reality of the Maha Chohan: noble, greathearted, kingly, patient, long-enduring, expert in adversity, a man of ranging mind, master improviser, grand master of invention, the great tactician, the canniest of men, master of land ways and sea ways, master of subtle ways and straight. The Odyssey is something we should all read and I have tapes on, having taught on that last summer.
We catch another glimpse of the person of the Maha Chohan through his work in the nineteenth century with the Masters M. and K.H. That’s El Morya and Koot Hoomi. These Masters were among those who sponsored the Theosophical Society, founded in 1875. At that time these Masters were high adepts and in embodiment. The Maha Chohan was the Guru of El Morya and Kuthumi.
In one of his letters Kuthumi referred to his Master as “the implacable Chohan.” Implacable means “not capable of being appeased, pacified or mitigated; unalterable.” Koot Hoomi also remarked that the Maha Chohan usually frowned. [laughter] On one a, on one occasion K.H. found himself in a situation of dire necessity. The Maha Chohan came to his rescue “with his eye twinkling in quite an unusual manner.” K.H. wrote that this led him “to hope for a relaxation of severity ‘one of these days.’” [laughter]
Madame Blavatsky said that the Maha Chohan “is as stern and impassionate as Death itself.” [laughter] I would add to Madame Blavatsky’s comment that the Maha Chohan is unmoved by the human consciousness. He is uncompromising. He compels those who would be his disciples to rise to his level rather than expect him to stoop to theirs. Remember that when you approach him. [laughter] It is because the Maha Chohan has such great love that he exacts so great a discipline. He knows that when he gives that love, it is a great gift. He does not give it to those who are not worthy or to those who trifle with his affection. [thunder; 10-second applause; thunder, laughter] He’s making his point. [laughter]
The Ascended Masters who have dictated through the Messenger Mark Prophet and me since 1958 give us further insight into the personality of the Maha Chohan. The Ascended Master Paul the Venetian tells of an encounter he had with the Maha Chohan:
Now, you know, when the Maha Chohan speaks, one does not refuse. Have you ever gazed upon the eyes of the Lord Maha Chohan? Even in heaven, in our ascended state, I once said to him, “I would like once again to take in my hand an earthly brush and palette and paint the beauty of your face.” And do you know, precious ones, that the Lord Maha Chohan never answered me. [laughter] He gave me a look that almost froze me in my tracks. [laughter] And I never mentioned it again. [laughter]
The Maha Chohan says that when you want to make progress on the spiritual path, you need to have a certain amount of sternness. So don’t look at people who are stern and serious and try to cajole them into being less serious. He teaches that human sympathy, or agreement with the human consciousness, as opposed to true compassion, is a perversion of the flame of the Holy Spirit and he will have none of it.
He says, “There is no other way to cut the tie with the human consciousness, to cut the tie with the human consciousness than to cut it!” That’s it. You cut it. [laughter; applause] “And it must be cut by a mighty sword, the sword that is sharp, two-edged and is the dividing of the way. There is no way that you can retain the companionship of the human consciousness and still receive the Holy Ghost!” Write it in capital lu, letters in your notes: “There is no way you can retain the con, companionship of the human consciousness and still receive the Holy Ghost.” So establish spiritual ties with loved ones and get beyond the human, because the human is changing every minute. The spiritual ties are lawful. By those ties of compassion you raise people up to another level of being.
Kuthumi teaches that it is the ego, the prideful self, that is offended by the gruffness of the Guru. Morya has a, an extremely gruff gatekeeper in Darjeeling. If you can get past the gatekeeper and not be offended by his gruffness, you get inside the Darjeeling Council chambers. Remember that. People think those who are gruff and curt and short and have that fire are somehow not on the Path. It’s the people who are the opposite, who are wishy-washy, that are not on the Path.
Pride will stand in your way of getting the Holy Spirit as sure as we live. The Maha Chohan says that your pride must be tested regularly “to see whether it is still there.” Have you said to yourself, “Boy, I’m working on my pride. I’m getting over this now,” and all of a sudden somebody insults you [laughter] and you find out you still have it? [laughter]
How can you know whether you still have personal pride? “By how you react to disrespectful or demeaning remarks made to you, or about you, by others.” Every time somebody says to me or tells me about some disparaging remark somebody has made about me, I said, “Forget it. I could care less. Just don’t even worry about it.” “When your pride is piqued,” says the Maha Chohan, “recognize how far you still have to go on the Path. If you can be offended by anyone who is over you or beneath you, if you are ready to throw in the towel because someone has in some way disgraced you, consider whether you are ready for a one-on-one relationship with an Ascended Master.”
The Maha Chohan says, “Pride will surely put great distance between you and myself. The Holy Spirit will not dispense his gifts to those who yet have pride. For how much more proud shall they become when they have the spiritual gifts” if they’re pride, if they’re proud when they don’t even have them yet?
A stern approach has always been used by the Ascended Masters of the Great White Brotherhood to disentangle souls from their worst enemy‑-their own lesser self. From the chelas’ standpoint, it can be “a fearful thing” and this is quote from Hebrews‑-it can be “a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” That’s from a chela’s standpoint, to fall into the hands of an Ascended Master who will pummel you, make you over and bring you to that point of adeptship. It’s frightening to think how we need to be taken apart and put back together again to become instruments of God.
But you can meet fire with fire. The way to respond to the sternness of an Ascended Master is to summon an inner fire that self-reflects and self-corrects. Correct yourself before you have to be rebuked by an Ascended Master. Do the self-correcting. Reflect upon yourself and root out the weeds. Unless you are going to slink away, there is nothing to do but stand, face and conquer that part of yourself that needs to go. And I think we all know what part of ourselves needs to go because we wrestle with it every day. Stop wrestling with it and kick it out.
The Maha Chohan once said in a dictation that he can thunder and roar like a lion. And you can too! So go ahead and thunder and roar like a lion. [Congregation roars; laughter; 5-second applause]
The Maha Chohan also fills the role of Teacher. The Father-Mother God and the Son have deferred to the Maha Chohan as the supreme teacher of our souls. He is the one sent to us to teach us the commandments of God the Father and the Word of the Divine Mother. He teaches us the Christlike qualities of Jesus and the Buddhalike qualities of Gautama. He tutors our souls to enter into a direct relationship with the Father-Mother God, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the supreme teacher. Remember, Jesus said the Comforter “shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” Just remember, if he is the supreme teacher and we have not established a right relationship with him, then we are sitting in the very gall of ignorance. How many times I’ve thought to myself, if I hadn’t been ignorant, I wouldn’t have done such and such, that is, as I review my entire life, this embodiment. It’s ridiculous. We let ourselves remain in ignorance and so we make wrong choices, we take the wrong road, we take, make the wrong decision.
So if he is the supreme teacher, we want him. And if we really want to be enlightened, we’ll be glad to strip ourselves of what stands in the way.
When we have submitted ourselves to the disciplines of at least three of the Seven Chohans of the Rays, then the Lord Maha Chohan will review our entire life record and determine whether he will take us on directly as his chelas in a true Master-Disciple ra, relationship. If we qualify, then the Maha Chohan will say to us, “I shall give you the same training I gave to the Seven Chohans.” He’s ready to do that if you are ready. “I shall not indulge you and I shall not give you any crowns that you have not earned.”
Although he may be stern with our lesser self, the Maha Chohan, as representative of the Holy Spirit, is a personal Comforter to each of us. In his role as Comforter, the Maha Chohan walks and talks with us so that we may be his instruments. In a dictation he once said:
I desire to approach very close to your heart. I am to you as the most personal friend.
Talk to me, then, and hold my hand. I have need of friends here below, for I have much to give and I require a consciousness, a heart, where I can place myself am, and impart to other parts of life a smile, a tear of joy, a gift of love, a witness to the truth. Won’t you take me with you, then, in consciousness? You might as well, for I am coming along anyway. [laughter]
Why should we want to get the Holy Spirit? This is where we began today and this is where we end. Because people are losing their souls. Without the Holy Spirit, we can do nothing about it. With the Holy Spirit, we can do something. They do not know what is real and what is not real. They are watching their family and friends and neighbors and countrymen become victims of incurable diseases, outrageous crimes, natural disasters and genocide. And they do not know where to turn or what to do.
The only way we can help them is to become empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit working through us will comfort and enlighten and heal and inspire others. The bottom line is this as far as I am concerned, if some people in the earth do not go all the way and become the living embodiment of the Holy Spirit, then literally millions of souls will be lost at the end of this age. Keepers of the Flame, I ask you to respond to this challenge and come up higher! [50-second standing ovation]
END
Who is the Maha Chohan?
As the Representative of the Holy Spirit, the Maha Chohan embodies the white light of all the rays and teaches the sevenfold balance of the rays of the Seven Mighty Elohim, which in turn manifest upon the brow of the initiate as a crown of crystal light when that God-mastery of the seven rays is reached.
The Maha Chohan is a very present help to all who call to him. Because of his pledge to all mankind “I am keeping the flame for you until you are able,” this truly Great Lord is called the Keeper of the Flame. He is the endower of Christ-mastery through the disciplines of right choice and right action—patterned after the eightfold path of Lord Gautama Buddha, which parallels the path taught and demonstrated by Jesus Christ.
These disciplines are accomplished through the mastery of free will, of the desires and the desire body, and of the path of the Sacred Heart and the Ruby Ray as the initiate balances the threefold flame and attains equilibrium in the white light of the seven rays in his chakras. Engaging in service to Community—the world body of Lightbearers—by the engagement of one’s forces, body, mind and soul, is the means to accomplish this goal.
Representative of the Holy Spirit
The Maha Chohan is the representative of the Holy Spirit. The one who holds this office in hierarchy represents the Holy Spirit of the Father-Mother God, of Alpha and Omega, to the evolutions of this planet and to the elemental kingdom. The retreat of the Maha Chohan, the Temple of Comfort, is located on the etheric plane with a focus in the physical at the island of Sri Lanka, where the flame of the Holy Spirit and the flame of Comfort are anchored. His twin flame is Pallas Athena, Goddess of Truth.
Maha Chohan means “Great Lord,” and the Maha Chohan is the Great Lord of the seven chohans, the director of the seven chohans of the rays. Among the qualifications for this office in hierarchy is the attainment of adeptship on each of the seven rays, which merge into the pure white light of the Holy Spirit. With the seven chohans, he initiates our souls in preparation to receive the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit, spoken of in the Bible, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11.
Since the Spirit of God infuses nature and man as the life-giving essence of the sacred fire, the representative of the Holy Spirit must be qualified to interpenetrate all substance through the diffusion of his consciousness and also to draw forth the flame that sustains life in man and nature through the focalization of his consciousness.
The element that corresponds to the flame of the Holy Spirit is oxygen. Without that element, neither man nor elemental life could continue their service. The consciousness of the Maha Chohan is, therefore, comparable to the Great Central Sun Magnet. He focuses the magnet upon the planet that draws to the earth the emanations from the sun that are required to sustain life.
