Our Reason for Existence is to Fulfill Our Duty to God

“Master gave me the word “dharma,” last night, and he told me it was duty. And he gave me the sense that we should all be more conscious of duty, and look at life not simply as a [unintelligible] or a working out of karma, but realizing that if we fail to fulfill our duty that we make karma, and therefore failure on dharma results in karma.

I think that sometimes we have a misguided concept of what our duty is. We feel that if we do just so much we have fulfilled our time, or if we have done what we told God we would do–our year of service we have put it in‑-well our duty is fulfilled. But I don’t think this is true.

And I think the Master wanted to get across this concept that you are never relieved of your duty. You never complete your duty to God. And if you have enough of the Holy Spirit within you, you realize that there must come forth from you a perpetual flame of comfort that goes out to life as your duty to God, to [unintelligible]. And therefore, “Well it wasn’t my fault,” or “I didn’t do it,” or “I wasn’t supposed to do that,” is a total absence‑-it shows a total absence of understand[ing] of what dharma is.

Dharma means picking up the pieces where another brother may have not completed his job. It means fulfilling the law in all its aspects. It means right use, right useness, the right use of energy. It means that if someone fails, it is our duty to succeed. It means that if someone doesn’t quite do the job right, it’s our duty to complete that job. Because we recognize that we are all part of one body and one life.

I think that the worst thing that can happen to people in life is this retirement age, sixty or sixty-five, when they say, “Well my duties are over and I can sit back and enjoy life.” And usually they pass on when they say this, because our reason for existence is to fulfill our duty to God.”
