The Emerald Tablet of the Heart
The Sign of Unalterable Change
I AM indeed Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus. I AM a Light, an eternal Light that has burned brightly in the scene of thy passage through earth. I have kept the torch alive and this one thing I have sent—it is the message of the Great White Brotherhood that thou art immortal, O man, and that this mortal coil is not, never was, nor indeed can be thine own identity.
Thou art cast down into the vales of limitation governed by mortality, cast down only by thine own downward thought and thought transference to Matter whereby the alchemy of mind is become the alchemy of thine own self-created Matter microcosm. And therefore, thou hast descended by law to the lowest level of thine own creation that thou might fire it with reality or withdraw the fire and separate it from the earthly. In so doing, the downward creation must collapse and the upward creation must rise.
Thus, we are here together—I, the above; thou, the below—to survey the scene, the scene which thou hast created in ignorance and perverseness, the scene that others have also created for their rests aggregate, a conglomerate of downward thoughts of the many. Thus observing the plight of souls who took flight to experiment with free will, I, Hermes, Messenger of the Gods and also the one called Mercury, have tarried, lo, these tens of thousands of years and beyond that there might be a torch of remembrance, an inscribing of the Law upon the emerald tablet of thy heart.
For, lo, the emerald tablet in the secret chamber of thy heart is even now unveiled by thine own Holy Christ Self, the priest-philosopher-scientist who officiates at the altar of unalterable change. It is that change that must come, that must be because I AM and because thou art also the God-man.
It remains for thee, O alchemist of the sacred fire, to differentiate the elements of earth and fire—the [Adam] Kadmon who is of the earth earthy and the one who is of the heavenly. It remains for the application of the sacred fire, by name the violet flame, for the separation to occur. And the separation cannot occur except regeneration occur simultaneously; and thou canst not ascend without regeneration. Thou canst not identify as the immortal one without the rising spiral of the inner Light.
Therefore I say, read the emerald tablet of the heart. Study the alchemy of thy self, for upon the tablet there is written not only the alchemy of the Macrocosm but the precise uses and misuses of the steps of precipitation whereby thou hast wrought both the Self and the anti-Self.
Regeneration, then, is the sign of those who are endowed with a living flame. Without that living flame, nor the violet light nor the resurrection spiral can appear. Thus those who are marked by the sign of unalterable change are those [who are] also marked by the white cube, the philosopher’s stone—the stone which the builders rejected that is become the chief cornerstone of thy temple.
Those who have the abiding presence of the Lord, YOD HE VAU HE, must recognize the immutable nature of this I AM THAT I AM and be about their Father’s business. Ye are his workmanship and ye are his workmen. Let the Father be known in the Son, even as I AM known to my own Son.
Blessed hearts, Tat Sat Tat. Even the vibration of the word of the Sun-emanation is a kindling light.
What wilt thou bring, O mortal, to the altar of change? What wilt thou bring? All except the inner fire must remain without. Bring the fire. Bring the elements four. Bring also the former experiments of thine alchemy, unsuccessful attempts to forge the Light-hearted one.
Let us see how the violet flame with the ingredient of the Ruby Ray and the action of the mathematics of the emerald tablet can result in sacred transmutation and the deriving of that purified essence, even the refined gold of permanent Selfhood. For some, you will do well to take with you an ounce of precious substance. For others, you will scarcely be able to contain or carry the gold that comes forth once you discover the secret of the ages—the dissolution of the not-self without loss of the Real Self.
Today the practice is still prevalent [of] the casting out of the self in its entirety, for men have not learned to extract the Light. They do not know that they were created by God as God-manifestations. They do not understand that indwelling, as the Light matrix of the emerald, there is absolute Truth and a reality that far transcends the vessel that is temporary.
All who have come forth in the name of the ancient wisdom, in the name of the Ancient of Days have not only proclaimed but [also] demonstrated the laws of immortality. We have been passing the torch of this divine alchemy for millions of years upon earth. For we have known that except our Brotherhood convey it, the sense of the eternality of the Self would be lost in the sense of the mortality of the fallen ones, who have nowhere to go except in the reduction of the coil of selfhood to its native nothingness. Nowhere would there be the proclamation of eternal Life except the Ascended Masters descend, taking on, then, the likeness, the form, the body of a man and therefore dwelling as the son of man that the Son of God might appear.
Earth has not been without the avatara. But this is an hour of great transition and great requirement where those who have been the recipients time and again, such as you, of the presence and the peace, the harmony and the enlightenment of such as we, must now receive the torch to be [and to become] all that you have witnessed [of the Adam Kadmon] for many hundreds of thousands of years upon earth. Thus no new avatara may descend except there be the magnet upon earth [of the inner alchemy of the Spirit in] those who are the ancient souls who have returned again and again.
It is time for the turning of the great alchemy of Life. It is time for the reflecting pools of many souls to reflect the fullness of the Spirit. It is time for the singing of the song [of Hermes Trismegistus] by all of the powers within, all of the initiatic symbols, all of the reinforcement of the will. By thy will, sing the hymn of the Sun and be the Son! By understanding, and not perverseness or ignorance, affirm the law of regenerative being and know that unless there be regeneration in the here and now, there cannot be regeneration in the hereafter.
We have convened this retreat to the sanctuary of the heart that you might contact the emerald tablet. And when we have touched you with our emerald fire it will connect you to your own tablet of the emerald ray and to our own, which is not mythological but remains sealed in the archives of the retreat of the Great White Brotherhood.
I come, then, to bring forward to your remembrance, to your chakras the memory of the appearance of Sanat Kumara, the memory of your own identity in God, the desire of your soul to conquer by the test of the ten each perversion of the twelve gates of the temple. Study, then, the Law of Life as taught by Gautama Buddha. Understand well the Ten Perfections of the Law, which he has delivered to you. Know what is the meaning of the test of the ten [through] the ten-petaled lotus centering in the solar plexus, the place of the sun below the heart in the Matter sphere. This flaming sun center and its tenfold path is the focusing of the Light of Aton in Matter.
By the establishment of the sun of one desire within the desire body, all energy and life that you have ever sent forth will rush homeward to the center of that place of the sun. One-pointedness of desire to be God, his emissary, his messenger, his manifestation—this one-pointedness results in the immediate manifestation of the Great Central Sun Magnet, the great sun disc. Centering, then, in the desire body, all karma, positive and negative, all energy ever qualified by the Word or the Work returns to the Sun for redemption.
Therefore in the action of the heart, in the Light of the heart and its twelvefold path, in the meditation and initiation of the secret chamber of the heart, generate and regenerate Light! Light! Light! And let it be the expansive Light of the great sun disc that calls home all the rays of the desire body that have gone forth as covetousness or envy or jealousy or ignorance. And the emanations of [inordinate] desire include all of the misappropriations of the twelve solar hierarchies.
Therefore let them return. And see to it that when they return, there is a fiery furnace of Solar Light burning there in the place of the sun that they might be consumed and the radiation of the purest desire of thy soul to be God may emanate to all the earth; and all evolutions of God may feel the remagnetization of divine purpose within that body.
The test of the ten is the path of selflessness, surrender, [and] service through sacrifice. Walking this path, [you may set] the great example. For unless the children of the Light, who are of God but have a lesser attainment of Light, shall master the desire body and the desire-emanation, they themselves cannot nor will they see eternal Life. But they will see that wrong desire leadeth unto death. Thus, should they descend lower in vibration than the sun center of the desire body without regeneration, without rectification of waywardness, their souls [would] be in jeopardy to be swallowed up by the negative coils so prevalent and momentous upon earth.
Let the children of the Sun hitch their chariots to God-desire! Let them be taught at an early age to master desire and all of the tastes and the sensations of the senses. Let them be taught to identify with the inner Light. Let them affirm: “I AM immortal! I AM a manifestation of God! I AM the Son of Light! I AM the emanation of the God Star, Sirius. Light and Life are my joy and I demagnetize the coils of Death unto the victory of God’s love where I AM.”
I therefore counsel you to endow the Matter self, each of its vehicles, with the violet flame, with the call to the resurrection fires, with the mantra “I AM the Resurrection and the Life.” I counsel you to consider what is the necessary formula of Being. I call to your hearts to intensify devotion. I call to your souls to come into the inner temple of the heart, to enter into the silence of the Buddha for the stilling of the senses.
When you gather in conclave and offer invocations to the Word, you establish the forcefield whereby the Truth may be given. And there are requirements of the Law—the coming together, the building of the spiral, the oneness of hearts, the violet flame platform. Therefore we come on the fourth day of this gathering but we have just begun to teach the Law. We have just begun to unveil fragments that lead to the whole of the inner tablet.
Realize, then, that this is the purpose for establishing Summit University—that a group of souls might work together in the sacred fire as alchemists to draw forth enough of that Light to create the necessary cradle into which we may project some new teaching of the Law, some further pushing back of the veils of ignorance, and the binding on the planetary scale of perverseness. There is an alchemy of hearts; there is an alchemy of souls.
We dare not speak, then, of higher mysteries if there be some who have entered in whose hearts are not pure toward the Light of Sanat Kumara. We await, then, the establishment of the receptive forcefield. And I would say that at advanced levels of Summit University it is necessary for the Messenger to select a small body of devotees whose calling it should be to maintain that forcefield by devotion and dynamic decree, whereby we might build upon the uncompleted spirals of the past. [For we would continue from] where we have left off for want of the necessary matrix to carry higher and higher a teaching that surely must be set ere this dispensation is complete for the foundation of the Law that will be given to incoming souls in this and succeeding centuries.
Let us recognize that the Teaching par excellence is the great gift that we have. Let us realize that the climate must be perfect—the environment, the application of hearts. Some must build. Some must concern themselves with administration or the preparation of the food or of other needed activities. But some must act for all to keep the flame of the flow of the Teaching.
It is not that the Messengers, such as I and all of the Ascended Masters, are not ready in all hours of the day and night to transmit the Word and it is not that the Messenger [in embodiment] is not ready. It is that she must wield the sword of the Spirit in defense of your yet fragile identity that is assailed by fallen ones even when you know it not.
And therefore it becomes of paramount necessity to defend the very life and Light and the flickering flame of souls who bring a tiny morsel of selfhood to the altar. And the winds of the Holy Spirit must fan it, expand it, enliven it, transfer to it the Divine Will and the water and the bread and the wine. And thus, keeping the flame with the Blessed Mother of Christ on behalf of the Lightbearers of earth becomes the most important part of the service of one who stands in our stead in the physical octave.
Let us realize the great opportunity, the joy, and the mercy of God unto us. Let us realize that that which has been lost and that which has never been revealed can be transferred and secured and held in your own archives if you but realize that it is the Teacher and the Teaching that must be protected and sealed and revered, that you also might become the Teaching and ultimately the Teacher.
In these hours you are so surfeited with teaching and so much Light and all that is already in store in the archives that it is not always easy for you to understand how much more could be given and how much more should be given even though beloved Alpha has declared that the work of the Messengers is complete. Blessed hearts, this is also a mystery of the divine alchemy, for the work is complete in the setting of the formula of Life but the deciphering of the formula must remain the work that is ongoing. And if you cannot crack the formula, how will it avail you?
Therefore it remains for the love-fires of the heart of devotion in those who stand at the top of the pyramid to melt with a fervent heat the formula that we have transferred that you might come to understand more of the meaning of the Om Tat Sat Om, that you might come to understand the expansiveness, the reality, the mansions, the initiations of your own causal body, and the way to journey there and the life that can be lived.
We rejoice that you have responded to set aside a place prepared as an inner retreat for the ongoing work of the Brotherhood. We will rejoice when all is functioning and secure, that we might proceed with certain planetary activities that are necessary for the acceleration of all evolutions of earth.
I desire now to continue to transmit to you that which is myself, that portion which I would give to my very own Son. I come forth, then, to share with you my Body and my Blood and this is the meaning: These are the coils of the caduceus of Alpha and Omega of my own being and witness to the Truth, the very specific Light, then, that God has placed within me of the Cosmic Christ—the Light-emanation that I have made my own out of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ.
Therefore, I impart to you my Communion, which is the communion with all saints through my heart. One in adoration with the heart of the Lord Christ, then, partake of the Christ consciousness of the entire Spirit of the Great White Brotherhood. And as you assimilate that Word, know that it is a magnet for the precipitation of your own Christhood and the sealing of our fellowship in the flame of the divine alchemy.
O Lord of the sun and the moon and the stars and the galaxies and sun centers, I call thee forth! Lord God, the Almighty One, the All, come forth. Let thy mighty light rays endow this substance with the perfect flow of the Alpha and Omega that is mine own to give, to impart, with which to initiate the opening of the emerald tablet and of the law of each one’s own being.
By the emerald ray I stand in the invincible Light of Truth! It is this Truth of each one’s own immortal being that I desire to impart, O God! Therefore be thou the All and the transmitter of this Communion.
I, Hermes, thy Son, thrice blessed by thy Holy Trinity, bow before the one Light. [Holy Communion is served by Hermes through the Messenger.]
In imparting to you the essence of myself, I impart the essence of my desire. And if you think upon this, every gift of yourself to another part of life must also contain the vibration of your desiring. Think, then, upon the responsibility to transfer only that God-desire that will uplift and exalt the immortality of the one within the soul.
Now I would tell you what is my heart’s desire and the desire of my soul of the ages. It is this—that once the Inner Retreat is won, it shall be so sponsored and endowed by Lightbearers throughout the world that there will be those who will be able to come forward in their meditation upon the Higher Mind and draw therefrom the disciplines, the learning, the inspiration of all fields of endeavor of which I have been the sponsor, in the name of Sanat Kumara, for these many, many centuries.
The call has gone forth for this university of the Spirit to embody every branch of human learning infused with the Divine. Therefore I have imparted to you this desire of my heart and, if you will have it, also the germinal seed of enlightenment in that particular area of your own devotion. And thus I am committed to bring forth, either through the Messenger or the individual alchemist within the laboratory of his own heart, the unfolding of the ongoing spiral of his own particular calling or discipline or profession, his unique service to life. This may come to the tutored heart, whether educated or uneducated in the worldly sense.
Thus if you desire to see breakthroughs in medicine, in technology, in all forms of the healing arts, in meditation upon the bringing forth of the avatars of Light, in farming, or in any other area of service be it music or art or any of the disciplines necessary to the forward movement of this Community and its opening to the golden age, so dedicate yourselves, so call to me, so call to the Masters of the Great White Brotherhood who will sponsor you with my own causal body. And let there be an opportunity for souls of Light to study, to learn, to share, to experiment and work together.
And therefore let all that I have imparted be brought home and bequeathed to the Lightbearers of this generation, that we might see that which is beneath reflect that which is above and the above be the magnet polarizing the beneath to a higher spiral of experience. Let us see the mighty spiral of the ages turn! Let there be a turning of worlds! Let there be a turning of planets! Let there be a turning of the solar system! And let all comprehend new life, new meaning, new experience, and new birth.
I AM Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus. I AM the everlasting Light going before the Community of servitors of God, bearing the torch of illumined action in the name of the Lord of the World Gautama Buddha. I AM the servant of Sanat Kumara and the Most High God. Let us blaze a trail to the summit! Let us make use of the land that God has given us for the supreme Victory.
I say to you one and all, neglect not the heart; and call the sacred fire to melt and transmute daily all hardness of heart, spiritual neglect, and records of death surrounding the sun center of your own heart chakra. Let us be diligent to expand the heart, for out of it are the issues of life. Out of the heart is the fullness of joy, transmutation, self-transcendence, God-realization! Let compassion rule the mind and let the divine intelligence of your native divinity rule the heart. And let the heart and the mind be one, and let the soul be the originator of both.
I contemplate a return, in the name of Kuan Yin, to Summit University this fall that I might continue to expound upon the readings of that which remains of the teaching that I have set forth. May there be a gathering of those who understand the mercy flame to be the highest offering of Self upon the altar of the world for the benefit of the forward movement of the I AM Race.
I come in the name of the Divine Mother—Mother of Mercy, Mother of Christ, Mother of All.
O fragments of the emerald, appear! Fragments of the divine alchemy, be drawn together now, for I decree it in the name of the I AM THAT I AM.

Prior to the dictation the Messenger gave a sermon on “Hermes the Thrice Great.”
The ascended master Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus is also known as the God Mercury.
Who is Hermes Trismegistus?
Hermes was known in ancient times as the great sage to whom is attributed sacred writings and alchemical and astrological works. Because of his learning and profound skill in the arts and sciences, the Egyptians gave him the name Trismegistus, which means “thrice-great.” The title “thrice-great” also applies to his role as philosopher, priest and king.
The ascended master Hermes Trismegistus is also known as the God Mercury. Hermes walked the earth for tens of thousands of years. He was on Atlantis, walked its streets, was in its temples and halls of learning and gave forth his teaching. He figures as the great archetype of the messenger of the gods.
James Campbell Brown writes in his History of Chemistry:
A series of early Egyptian books is attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, who may have been a real savant, or may be a personification of a long succession of writers…. He is identified by some with the Greek god Hermes [equated with the Roman god Mercury] and the Egyptian Thoth…. The Egyptians regarded him as the god of wisdom, letters, and the recording of time.
The historical record
Until the seventeenth century, Hermes was thought to have been a contemporary of Moses. His writings were considered by Christians to be almost as sacred as the Bible. Church Father Justin Martyr even went so far as to compare him to Jesus. The Greek Church Father Clement of Alexandria spoke of forty-two “Books of Thoth” dealing with priestly education, temple ritual, geography, astrology, guidance for kings, hymns to the gods and medicine. Regrettably, these were lost in the burning of the library at Alexandria.
Scholars today tell us Hermes was an ancient Egyptian sage, or perhaps a succession of sages. They believe that a whole line of teachers or a priesthood may have written under the name Hermes. The prevailing theory is that the Hermetic writings may span several centuries, dating as late as the first or second century A.D.
According to an ancient Egyptian historian, Hermes wrote 36,525 books. His subjects included alchemy, astrology and theology. He was looked to as the custodian of wisdom and literature. In order to enlighten the people, Hermes had his instructions engraved in hieroglyphics upon tables or columns of stone throughout Egypt.
Some have placed Hermes in the time period before the Flood. Archaeologist James Churchward traces Thoth back to the days of Atlantis. The Egyptians honored Thoth as the god of wisdom, learning and literature. They saw him as the inventor of all arts and sciences, including writing, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, theology, political economy, medicine, surgery, music and musical instruments. He was believed to be the scribe of the gods.
Scholar Hargrave Jennings writes:
Another Thoth, or Hermes, is said to have lived at a later period. He was equally celebrated with the former, and to him is particularly appropriated, by some, the name of Trismegistus. According to Manetho [an Egyptian priest and historian c. 300 B.C.], he [this second Thoth] translated from engraved tables of stone, which had been buried in the earth, the sacred characters of the first Hermes. He wrote the explanation of them in books, which were deposited in the Egyptian temples.
The emerald tablet
Hermes Trismegistus has been referred to as the father of alchemy. According to one legend, a slab of emerald found in his tomb had inscribed upon it Hermes’ precepts for making gold. This emerald tablet contained the familiar Hermetic axiom: “What is below is like that which is above. And what is above is like that which is below.”
One ancient author who claimed to have seen the stone said that it was an emerald on which the characters were represented in bas-relief, not engraved. The material had once been in a fluid state like melted glass and had been cast in a mold, and it had been given the hardness of a genuine emerald by alchemical means.
The emerald tablet has long been regarded in the mystery schools as one of the oldest and most profound expositions of spiritual alchemy. It presents an alchemical formula that has been used by the adepts and alchemists for thousands of years to assimilate the most essential understanding of both physical transmutation and spiritual regeneration. However, its statements clearly hide to all but the true alchemist their inner meaning.
The ascended master Hermes has taught of the emerald tablet of the heart:
I, Hermes, messenger of the Gods and also the one called Mercury, have tarried, lo, these tens of thousands of years and beyond that there might be a torch of remembrance, an inscribing of the Law upon the emerald tablet of thy heart.
For, lo, the emerald tablet in the secret chamber of thy heart is even now unveiled by thine own Holy Christ Self, the priest-philosopher-scientist who officiates at the altar of unalterable change. It is that change that must come, that must be because I AM and because thou art also the God-man.
He instructed us to
… neglect not the heart; and call the sacred fire to melt and transmute daily all hardness of heart, spiritual neglect and records of death surrounding the sun center of your own heart chakra. Let us be diligent to expand the heart, for out of it are the issues of life.
The Hermetic tradition
The Hermetic tradition teaches that it is through mystical experience that man attains liberation. Scholar Sidney Spencer writes:
The Hermetic mystic sees his unity with all beings. The purgation and illumination of the soul which he attains brings him the consciousness of universal fellowship, and it is his task to do good to all.
In the Mahatma Letters the Master K.H. praises Hermetic philosophy:
Hermetic Philosophy suits every creed and philosophy and clashes with none. It is the boundless ocean of Truth, the central point whither flows and wherein meet every river, whether its source be in the East, West, North, or South. As the course of the river depends upon the nature of its basin, so the channel for the communication of Knowledge must conform itself to surrounding circumstances. The Egyptian Hierophant, the Chaldean Mage, the Arhat, and the Rishi, were bound in days of yore on the same voyage of discovery and ultimately arrived at the same goal though by different tracks.
According to scholar Walter Scott, some of the Hermetic texts may have been written down by the pupils of Ammonius Saccas, a renowned third-century Alexandrian teacher and one of the founders of the Neoplatonic movement. He was a teacher of Origen. Helena Blavatsky considered that the most important goal of the Theosophical Society was to revive the work of Ammonius Saccas. Blavatsky wrote:
It was Ammonius who first taught that every religion was based on one and the same truth; which is the wisdom found in the Books of Thoth (Hermes Trismegistus), from which books Pythagoras and Plato had learned all their philosophy.
