Good afternoon, everyone. [response] Welcome to Summit University 1997. [14-second standing ovation] I’d like you to remain standing so I can give an invocation.

INVOCATION:

In the name of the Light of God that never fails, let the entire Spirit of the Great White Brotherhood descend into our midst in this moment, in this hour. Mighty Victory and legions of Light, hosts of angels, Archangels, legions of white fire, come forth now to planet earth, to this system of worlds, to all galaxies.

Let there be a purification of consciousness of all creatures for the lowest to the greatest. We call to you, Almighty God, to stir our hearts, to intensify thy love ray within us, to establish Truth as the bedrock of our own being, to establish our understanding of how we use power for the multiplication of our own victory in the light.

Let the Power, Wisdom and Love of God be the fleur-de-lis, the full power of the threefold flame. In the name of the Holy Spirit, the Father and the Son, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the name of Padma Sambhava, Lord Maitreya, beloved Sanat Kumara, Lord Gautama Buddha, be with us now that we might assimilate thy Causal Body, thy action of light in us that we might understand who and what we are in the eyes of God.

If we are acceptable in thy sight, O God, we are grateful. If we are not acceptable in thy sight, then receive us now, O Lord, during these weeks that we might purify the vessel and thereby enter in.

O living Christ, O living Buddha, living light of the Morning Star, come forth now, for we would give to our planetary home all that you have given to us. Let hearts be healed. Let many know the truth. This we ask. This we accept. In the name of the Blessed Mother, the Sacred Heart, so it is done. In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit and the Divine Mother, Amen.

LECTURE BEGINS:

I’m inviting you to sing to our beloved El Morya. We will be singing to him at the beginning of each of our sessions. This is “Pomp and Circumstance,” and during the playing of that music which we see as El Morya’s music, we ask you to make fiats and calls for the transmutation of all burdens that are upon you today, all burdens that you may have brought with you to this conference.

This is the opportunity that El Morya has given us. He has said to us, Take the little picture of myself (it’s a wallet-size card) and place that on your right knee face down. When you do this, think of all things that are burdens that you would like to have me deliver you from.

So we take that time for the playing of “Pomp and Circumstance” to do just that, to speak to El Morya, a great Ascended Master whom you will hear many, many times. Ask him to carry your burden. This is his request. He will be, he will carry that burden for you so that you can make the calls for the healing of the planet, the solar system and the universe. This is our beloved El Morya’s desire.

You are free to give calls while the music is being played, and when we sing the song it is 192. If you don’t hap it, have it, perhaps we can secure them–if not today, very shortly. So we’ll begin with the “Pomp and Circum­stance” music and your prayers and fiats. [Messenger and students give calls while “Pomp and Circumstance” plays.]

Thank you. Won’t you be seated. Before we begin I would like to introduce to you the Ascended Master El Morya. You may know him very well and have known him for centuries or tens of thousands of years. You may be meeting him for the first day, for the first time.

The Ascended Master El Morya took his ascension in 1898. He founded The Summit Lighthouse, this organization, in 1958. He has been the sponsor of the Messengers, myself and Mark Prophet. He has given to us his heart, his entire soul and being, for the bringing of the Teachings of the Ascended Masters to the world.

El Morya is a Master of the First Ray. It is the blue ray, and the blue ray is the ray of power, of intensity. But the inner lining of that ray is always a ray of love as well as tremendous illumination. Beloved El Morya, then, is the sponsor of this two-week course and we are very grateful to know his Presence in our midst. I have been feeling him for a number of days as the intensity of his Presence has multiplied.

There are many various gurus around the world who are self-proclaimed, who do this and that. And some of them, of course, are very, very wonderful people. What is the difference between an Ascended Master and a master that moves through the earth is that the Ascended Master has attained union with God, does not require to reincarnate on earth but may move among earth’s people to do good and to bring about salvation for the millions.

So those who are on the path of the ascension–there are many throughout the world–they are determined to support El Morya in his worldwide endeavor to cut free the souls of light. So inasmuch as El Morya is our sponsor, we will then sing to him number 192, “Master Morya.” Please stand. Again, you are welcome to offem, offer your calls to him for matters in your personal life or beyond your personal life.

You are seated in the Electronic Presences of the three Masters now. And as you reinforce that daily, you will come to walk and talk with them, know them personally, commune with them and listen to the words of their hearts.

So we begin. I see you have your notebooks. Make good use of them.

The odyssey of your soul. That’s what this session of Summit University is all about. How many of you know what the word “odyssey” means?

An “odyssey” is a long wandering or voyage, usually marked by many changes of fortune. “Odyssey” is also used to describe an intellectual or spiritual wandering or quest. The word is taken from the epic poem written by Homer called “The Odyssey.”

“The Odyssey” recounts the long and challenging journey of the Greek hero Odysseus as he sails home after the Trojan War. Homer’s magical tale is an archetypuc, it’s an archetypal story of the initiation and soul evolution. The story of Odysseus is the story of your own soul–and of everyone who embarks upon a spiritual quest.

Each of his adventures–on sea or on land–is a rite of passage, a rite of passage. If we can understand his lessons, we will be better prepared for our own spiritual odyssey which, come what may, may be just around the corner. And so that‘s exactly what we‘re going to do–we‘re going to use the adventures of Odysseus to map the odyssey of our own soul. Once we have mapped the odyssey of our soul, we will have a map. We will know where we are going. And where we are going is that quest, rising from the seat-of-the-soul chakra up the levels of being until we gain reunion with our Holy Christ Self.

Historically, little is known about Homer, but most scholars believe he wrote “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey” in the 8th or 9th century B.C. As some of you know, Homer was an incarnation of the Maha Chohan, the Ascended Master who is the Representative of the Holy Spirit. The sponsor­ing Masters of this quarter, as I have told you, are El Morya, Kuthumi and Djwal Kul. They have a very special relationship to the Maha Chohan, who is also called The Great Lord.

In the early days of The Theosophical Society, the Maha Chohan was the Guru of El Morya and Kuthumi–the adepts who founded that society in 1875 through Helena Blavatsky. El Morya and Kuthumi called the Maha Chohan “the chief.” It was from him that El Morya and Kuthumi received permis­sion to instruct students in the West. He also guided them in the manage­ment of the Theosophical Society. At that time, Djwal Kul was the foremost disciple of Kuthumi.

So in this session of Summit University, sponsored by El Morya, Kuthumi and Djwal Kul, we will study the wisdom of their own Guru, the Maha Chohan. First, let me introduce you to our hero, Odysseus. (In Latin his name is Ulysses.) Odysseus is not the biggest and brawniest of the Greek heroes. But he is the most intelligent. He is renowned as a master strategist. His character–like our own–is complex.

He has character strengths and character weaknesses, just as we do. Odysseus is coura­geous, ingenious, resourceful, wise, good hearted, loyal and enterprising. But he is also hot tempered, curious, arrogant, egotisti­cal, proud and rash. His task is to transform his human character traits into their divine counterparts. We must do the same. He must also balance the karma he makes by acting rashly–which he has a habit of doing.

Reaping what you sow–the law of karma–is one of Homer’s themes. For in the opening scene of “The Odyssey,” Zeus proclaims before the gods gathered on Mount Olympus: “How men blame the gods for their ills, when in fact it is by their own folly that they get woes beyond measure!”

The name “Odysseus” means “trouble.” [laughter] In the context of Homer’s tale, “trouble” can be interpreted as “karma.” And wherever Odysseus turns, trouble is close behind. Have you ever said to yourself, “Everywhere I turn, I just can’t seem to get away from trouble!” We all have our troubles–our karma. That‘s a given. It’s part of the human equation.         The question is: What are we going to do about it? And that’s the pivotal teaching of this entire course. What are we going to do about it? How are we going to deal with that karma? Are we going to see ourselves as victims? Or, like Odysseus, are we going to meet the challenge head-on, no matter what the price? Are we willing to do what it takes to return “home”–home to God?

As we explore the journey of Odysseus, remember this: for all of its vivid color, his odyssey is not just a series of wild adventures. It is highly symbolic. First and foremost, the drama of Odysseus is an inner drama. The men on his crew represent elements of himself–parts of his own character he must come to grips with.

The ogres, the temptresses, and the monsters he meets along the way are also parts of his own personality that he can no longer afford to ignore. And I say to all of you, students of the Ascended Masters, none of us can in any way afford to ignore the situation of our karma.

You have heard it said that the traits we most dislike in others are actually our own negative traits. Since we don’t want to acknowl­edge that we have these traits, we unconsciously project them onto other people or situations. In Jungian terms, we project our “shadow”–the part of ourselves that we don’t know or that we don’t like–onto someone outside of our­selves. That’s the trick our unconscious plays to get us to pay attention to it.

So, in each of his adventures, Odysseus is forced to acknowledge and then deal with another unwelcome element of his own lower self. For the very same reason do we sit in this hall today. Or, he has to learn to integrate with a part of himself that he has disowned. And we must do the same again.

Now, Odysseus has his faults. But he is also made of the stuff heroes are made of. What is he made of? Listen well, for these are the factors that will make you a hero as well. Odysseus keeps his eye on his goal. [Pause] Odysseus keeps his mind on his goal. He is not afraid to make a mistake.He coura­geously accepts and faces his trials. When he makes a mistake, he bounces back. He learns from his mistakes. He’s not afraid of pain. He endures. He is open to discovering more about his inner self. He is willing to sail on the uncharted seas of his psyche.  He doesn’t dwell on the past. He respects the gods. He is obedient to their directions. He has a spiritual teacher who intercedes for him.

Now the gods in that case can be seen as Ascended Masters (we as their students) and we are apprenticed to them. In the case of Odysseus, his teacher is the goddess Pallas Athena, daughter of Zeus. Sections of “The Odyssey” are a tender tribute to Athena. And no wonder–the Maha Chohan’s twin flame, or soul-partner, is the Ascended Lady Master Pallas Athena.

In the Odyssey, Pallas Athena is Odysseus’ guide and friend. She is his mentor, and he is her protégé. She works behind the scenes to get him back on track. Ultimately, without her intercession, he would never have made it. But he himself has earned that sponsorship because he is determined to stand, face and conquer. In fact, he so mirrors her own qualities that she is compelled to befriend him.

Homeric scholar Howard Clark writes: “Athena protects Odysseus because he has the skill and cleverness and strength that are also her characteris­tics….When a Homeric hero is assisted by a god it is not a sign that he is weak, but rather that he is strong.”

What is most amazing about “The Odyssey” is that the trials of Odysseus remarkably correspond to the 12 signs of the zodiac and to the 12 initiations of the cosmic clock. So, for each episode of the Odyssey, we will examine how each of the adventures of Odysseus correspond to the initiations we mark on the 12 lines of the cosmic clock. We will study how each of his challenges reflectxs, reflects the challenges we all face on the correspond­ing sign of the zodiac. We will also explore the spiritual lessons of each adventure and how we have faced the same tests ourselves. Finally, we will talk about some practical ways you can navigate through the challenges of your own odyssey.

When I first communed with the Masters about the theme for this session of Summit University, they told me it should be the victory of love on the 12 lines of the clock. Love is the key to meeting every one of the challenges that you will face. In the book Heart published by the Roerichs–which I believe was dictated by El Morya to Helena Roerich–the Master says: “Only the energy of the heart makes a man invulnerable and carries him over obstacles.” Only the energy of the heart makes a man invulnerable and carries him over obstacles. “Thus, one may remember the heart as a weapon. Precisely–the heart is the weapon of Light!” Love then is the key to the passing of our tests on the cosmic clock. It is also the key to the victory of Odysseus.

Before we start with the 12 o’clock line of Capricorn, I want you to keep in mind that when we talk about a Capricorn test, it doesn’t apply only to people who were born under the sign of Capricorn. You face the challenges of every astrological sign, because each area of your life–your personality, your career, your home life, your finances, et cetera–is ruled by a different sign. In astrological terms, these different areas of your life are called “houses”–houses.

You’ll be hearing more about this in your basic astrology class. But let me give you a quick example. You may be born under the sun sign of Cancer, but your 6th house of health, work and service may be ruled by Capricorn. So that part of your life–your health and your work–takes on the influence of Capricorn. And in your health and work, you will deal with Capricorn challenges. Also, during certain times of the year and times of your life, the activity of one or more signs may be highlighted because certain planets are moving through those signs in the heavens.

The reason it is important to know about your astrological cycles is that your astrology is a map of your returning karma–both the good and the bad. When you know your astrology, you can anticipate your tests. And when you have studied the archetypal test that Odysseus passed through, you will be able to better prepare for your own challenges.

Now, take a moment before we begin and think about what are the three strong points of your character and the three weakest points–the three, the three strong points in your character and the three weakest points.

In a dictation given on July 2, 1995, the Goddess of Light said: “Most people on earth, as we have calculated in surveys our angels have taken, have three knots in conscious­ness that hold them back, pull them back. These knots are so obvious, right beneath their noses, that they fail to see them year after year. And some pass from the screen of life in the change called death never having realized that they missed the most obvious of matters that they came into embodiment to correct….What you condemn yourself for God may wink at, and you may have lost the point of what are the real challenges because you are so caught up in your own self-condemna­tion….

“Think, then, of the three strongest points in your lifestream where you show the greatest strength of character–the honor, the nobility, the constancy, the stick-to-itiveness….You should always have three points of acceleration and attainment that you are working on and these three elements of character that you desire to eliminate. If these are always with you, you will make constant progress.”

So let’s take a minute to do this exercise. Write down on a piece of paper your three strong points and your three weakest points–the three character traits you want to overcome. This will help you focus on what you want to accomplish as we go through 12 days together. I’m going to give you five minutes to do this exercise.  [Students complete exercise.]

What we will discover from our strengths and weaknesses is how strong or how weak is the threefold flame that burns on the altar of our hearts. I need to digress for a moment on this subject, because it is pivotal. The threefold flame itself is pivotal. And we know that its plumes are the yellow, the blue and the pink. So over the centuries and tens of thousands of years we have allowed ourselves to take the easy path.

The easy path is one that is the least difficult, when in fact we should be tackling the challenge of that which is most difficult. So if we neglect the threefold flame and do not work at balancing these three primary colors– which are three primary powers even as they are three primary deities–so if we don’t go back to that threefold flame and the white sphere that holds it from, from the base, then it’s like a top, a child’s top, that, that will not spin. But it will fall over if you try to make it spin because it is top-heavy. It goes one way, it goes the other.

So in recent Pearls of Wisdom the Masters have spoken. They’ve spoken repeatedly about this subject. And they say, Until you balance your threefold flame you cannot have the stupendous action of light that is yours. It actually belongs to you but you can’t claim it because you haven’t mastered it.

So when you look at the things that are the most difficult or the easiest that you do, the things that you do best, the things that you do the not so, so good, what you’re really looking at is if you have gotten away with being working only with the will of God and the blue plume, which is very martial, very disciplined, very determined, very energetic–if you’re constantly on that particular point of the threefold flame, you’re likely also to become brittle, to not have a great development of the love ray. Perhaps you haven’t even developed the yellow plume.

So when you approach the threefold flame with the idea that you’re going to do as much as, as or as little as you have to and you’re not really going to work at it, you should really understand that unless that threefold flame is balanced the two smaller ones have to be brought up to the highest one. So let’s say that one was the highest one, the blue. Then you have to bring the yellow up to the blue. Then you have to bring the bring, the bl, the, the pink up to the yellow.

So finally then you have a, a completed threefold flame and the balance of the white fire of that threefold flame. So think about this and realize that our weakest points we must tackle. And this is the place to do it, here at Summit University where we’re all together and we all realize that we all have these imbalances. It’s very, very important. You can’t get very far without that balance.

So I want, I don’t want to keep emphasizing it, but I think you’ll come to realize that it’s really impossible to have your victory without that balance. You can’t make your ascension if your threefold flame is not balanced. So keep it in mind.

So here we are on the 12 o’clock line. We’re starting at high noon, the 12 o’clock line of God-power. And the chakra is the crown chakra. Storyline is [Messenger instructs A.V.] Odysseus at the Trojan War. Imagine you are Odysseus…. Imagine this is Halloween, October thirty-first. You don the garment of Odysseus. You become him. You feel him. You begin thinking like him. You begin acting like him. You do some naughty things he does, and you, and you do some very brave things that he does.

So you are Odysseus, king of Ithaca, an island off the west coast of Greece. He is married to the beautiful Penelope, who has just borne him a son. Just when everything seems to going well, a catas­trophe hits the Greek world. Helen, the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus, runs off with Paris, the prince of Troy. All the Greek heroes band together to rescue her.        Odysseus is renowned for his cleverness and ingenuity, and the Greeks know they cannot win the war without him. But an oracle has told Odysseus that if he goes to Troy he will not return for 20 years and will arrive home alone and destitute. Under­standably, he doesn’t want to leave. When three Greeks come to recruit him, they find him plowing and pretending he is crazy. But when they throw his son in front of the plow and he steers clear of the child, Odysseus is exposed. He is then compelled to fight in the Trojan war.

Odysseus is the most clever of the Greek war­riors, and his cunning and bravery help win the war. At one point, the Greek warriors lose heart and prepare to return home. The war has been long and grueling, and they are discouraged. The goddess Pallas Athena directs Odysseus to rally the men. He obeys and inspires the army to continue their fight. Finally, after 10 years, Odysseus ends the stalemate by engineering an ingenious ruse: the Trojan horse.

The Greeks build a huge wooden horse and Greek warriors hide in its belly. The Trojans are tricked into wheeling the horse inside their gates. After the Trojans are asleep, the Greeks sneak out of the horse, open the city gates and let in the Greek army. The Greeks burn and sack the city. They butcher the Trojan men and enslave the women.

The gods, who had helped the Greeks all along, are offended by the wanton violence, wild looting and slaughter. As a result, Poseidon, the god of the sea, stirs up violent storms to harass the Greek fleet that is returning home.  Some Greeks die, and others have a difficult time getting home. But none faces more challenges than Odysseus.

At the close of the Trojan war, he sets out for home with 12 ships filled with booty from the sack of Troy. He longs to be reunited with his faithful wife, Penelope, whom he loves dearly, and his son, who was just an infant when Odysseus left for the war. But for all his victories and cleverness in battle, Odysseus is not ready to return home.  For he is not yet whole.

We are not yet whole. We cannot return to God either until we get whole. That’s why we’re here at Summit University. We’re not ready rr, to return home even if we think we’re ready to return home. Because if we were ready to return home, God would have already plucked us out of this assembly. So we are not whole but we hope we’re getting there.

Odysseus is not whole either. He has some important lessons to learn, some karma to balance, as do we all. And the gods will not let him return home until he learns those lessons and balances that karma. We will now see a clip from the TV movie of The Odyssey that aired recently. Keep in mind that some of the episodes do not match Homer’s storyline exactly.

Who is the Maha Chohan?

As the Representative of the Holy Spirit, the Maha Chohan embodies the white light of all the rays and teaches the sevenfold balance of the rays of the Seven Mighty Elohim, which in turn manifest upon the brow of the initiate as a crown of crystal light when that God-mastery of the seven rays is reached.

The Maha Chohan is a very present help to all who call to him. Because of his pledge to all mankind “I am keeping the flame for you until you are able,” this truly Great Lord is called the Keeper of the Flame. He is the endower of Christ-mastery through the disciplines of right choice and right action—patterned after the eightfold path of Lord Gautama Buddha, which parallels the path taught and demonstrated by Jesus Christ.

These disciplines are accomplished through the mastery of free will, of the desires and the desire body, and of the path of the Sacred Heart and the Ruby Ray as the initiate balances the threefold flame and attains equilibrium in the white light of the seven rays in his chakras. Engaging in service to Community—the world body of Lightbearers—by the engagement of one’s forces, body, mind and soul, is the means to accomplish this goal.

Representative of the Holy Spirit

The Maha Chohan is the representative of the Holy Spirit. The one who holds this office in hierarchy represents the Holy Spirit of the Father-Mother God, of Alpha and Omega, to the evolutions of this planet and to the elemental kingdom. The retreat of the Maha Chohan, the Temple of Comfort, is located on the etheric plane with a focus in the physical at the island of Sri Lanka, where the flame of the Holy Spirit and the flame of Comfort are anchored. His twin flame is Pallas Athena, Goddess of Truth.

Maha Chohan means “Great Lord,” and the Maha Chohan is the Great Lord of the seven chohans, the director of the seven chohans of the rays. Among the qualifications for this office in hierarchy is the attainment of adeptship on each of the seven rays, which merge into the pure white light of the Holy Spirit. With the seven chohans, he initiates our souls in preparation to receive the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit, spoken of in the Bible, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11.

Since the Spirit of God infuses nature and man as the life-giving essence of the sacred fire, the representative of the Holy Spirit must be qualified to interpenetrate all substance through the diffusion of his consciousness and also to draw forth the flame that sustains life in man and nature through the focalization of his consciousness.

The element that corresponds to the flame of the Holy Spirit is oxygen. Without that element, neither man nor elemental life could continue their service. The consciousness of the Maha Chohan is, therefore, comparable to the Great Central Sun Magnet. He focuses the magnet upon the planet that draws to the earth the emanations from the sun that are required to sustain life.

The Maha Chohan is Present at Your Birth and Death

The Maha Chohan ministers to every person on earth as we enter this world and as we exit it. At the moment of that birth, he is present to breathe the breath of life into the body and to ignite the threefold flame that is lowered into manifestation in the secret chamber of the heart.

The Maha Chohan also attends at the transition called death, when he comes to withdraw the flame of life and to withdraw the holy breath. The flame, or divine spark, returns to the Holy Christ Self, and the soul, clothed in the etheric body, also returns to the level of the Holy Christ Self.

The Maha Chohan’s Previous Lifetimes

The Maha Chohan was embodied as the blind poet Homer, whose epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey, include his twin flame, Pallas Athena, as a central figure. The Iliad tells the story of the last year of the Trojan War, while the Odyssey focuses on the return home of Odysseus—one of the heroes of the Trojan War.

Historically, little is known about Homer, but most scholars believe he composed his poems in the eighth or ninth century BC. Even at that time, Homer attuned his consciousness with the comfort flame, and the radiance he sustained with the focus of his own heart flame was a great blessing to elemental life.

In his final embodiment as a shepherd in India, the light that he quietly drew forth kept the flame for millions of lifestreams.
