Pre-Lecture, A Teaching on the Violet Flame
Several years ago we had an address here by the great ruler of the Violet Planet, Omri Tas. When he gave this address, I was quite moved because of the fact that these priests of the sacred fire hurled these large violet balls of violet flame substance at our nation’s capitol as a purification of the Congress of the United States and for the blessing of America. When this occurred, I will confess to you that while I believed Omri Tas and did not doubt that this was done, in my own mind I said, “Oh, well, this is a spiritual act. It is not necessarily something of the vibratory rate that our physical eyes could see.”
A little while later, I think it was the next evening around five o’clock‑-and he had told us how these balls of flame would remain here all over the earth‑-we were riding in the car out to Virginia. I don’t know it Al Schein is here this morning or not. Al was in the car, a friend of ours from Texas and two or three other people.
Suddenly someone hollered out and they said, “Why, there they are!” I said, “What do you mean?” I no sooner said this than visibly, on the horizon and all over the whole area, even on top of the buildings and piled up like marbles, were violet fire balls. And these were huge. And they were physical. They were not imaginary.
Now you understand they were like soap bubbles, but they were all tinged with violet, and they were moving. They’d move here and there like soap bubbles, and they’d come to a building and…
There were clusters of them, five and then and twenty and…
There were probably as much as an accumulation of, I should say, one thousand or more visible to us. Now the interesting thing is that this was, not just to one person. It was not a hallucination. And we were able to tell each other after we had witnessed it exactly what we saw, and we all agreed. There was no hypnosis about it or anything like that. We were driving a car and we were behaving ourself in traffic. We were perfectly rational. There was no involvement with hallucination of any kind. But we were seeing into the vibratory action of that substance.
I do not think that everyone saw it, or you would have read about it in the Washington Post. But the fact that it was visible and showed the action of it was so impressive to me, that I have ever since been in great awe of this great being Omri Tas. And there was a wonderful action from the violet fire.
I just wanted to pass that on to you this morning because it’s interesting and it’s true. This number you want is sixty-eight. This is an old Bohemian folk song called “The Birds Return.” And we use it as a focus of love to Omri Tas. So let us sing to him for his great love and to the 144,000 priests of the sacred fire that serve on the Violet Planet. [music was cut from tape]
It’s a beautiful thing. Do you think now that we could sing “The Waltz of the Flame”?
This is a very difficult song to sing. Many years ago, in Vienna, Johann Strauss, who was at inner levels a chela of Saint Germain, had inspired upon him the wonderful strains of the Strauss waltzes. And they have the vibratory action of the ascended master’s joy. And of course this delight was quite popular in Vienna and now is popular all over the world. It continues to the present day.
But in truth the lightness and gaiety that create a blithe spirit, one who can find joy in living, is captivated in the music. And what is music? To “muse” is a quiet thought, like a pool. And therefore, when we understand music correctly, we find it a-musing. And the waltzes are amusing because they bring joy to the elementals.
Those who have spiritual vision to see and are able to commune with the little people, the elementals, or the fairies as the Irish would say, understand that they respond with great joy to this type of music also. I have seen them dancing many times, and actually many of the ballet movements that are executed by the greatest ballerinas are executed by the elementals. And the movements that are a part of our modern ballet, and also other forms of ballet, the old types of ballet, are in the main developed from elementals themselves through the sensitivity of the artists who were able to bring them forth.
Actually, this complete flexibility of the body and its response to the quickness of the mind in ballet is a wonderful thing. I think all of us, when we watch someone on the stage who is really adept, or a ballerina, we admire this individual very much because we vicariously fit ourselves into the complex of their being. We imagine that we are up there pirouetting around and gaily going through these maneuvers. Of course those who have a little more calcium in their blood then others realize that they couldn’t do it with impunity. They’d be very sore the next day. But they can do it mentally. So while this person is gaily going through the maneuvers, the rest of us are mentally following it, you see, and enjoying it.
Now in this “Waltz of the Flame” I hope that you will practice the mental gymnastics of the elemental and imagine that you are all very light and gay, for you are. And you must be very happy in the fact that the Lord liveth this morning. Of course he’s alive every morning, but he’s alive today, too. This is no exception. This is the day that the Lord hath made. Let us be glad and rejoice – has meaning if we put meaning into it. And this “Waltz of the Flame” that Saint Germain inspired on Johann Strauss can live then as a waltz of the flame. Let us practice this with great happiness.

Fortunate are we one and all who have this violet flame. I remember many years ago, when the violet flame was first given to me, that I found it a little difficult to accept its reality intellectually at the first blush of its revelation. I did not quite understand it then. So I decided that I would ask how to use it. And I was told how to use it. But I still did not understand it or comprehend it.
It was like the old German biblical statement, “Die Licht scheint in die Finsterniss und die Finsterness hats nichts begriffen,” because I didn’t understand it at all. But I decided that if it was scientific and had a method, that I would do it anyway. And so I did. In my case I must have been very dense because it took me about six or seven months before I began to get the results that I would like to have had, as I recall it. Perhaps I’ve doubled it now; I may be doubling it every time I tell this story. So probably next time it’ll be twelve or fourteen months. But anyway, it took me a little while before I was able to get the full feeling of the flame and see its release.
But the effects were taking place all the while. So I recommend it to you, or commend it to you, as the case may be. As has been said before, it doesn’t cost anything to try it, and it certainly does get results. So now we are going to put our tube of light around ourselves and invoke the violet individually. This will begin the action of the violet flame.
We’ve had the music now to bring a sense of joy and release to us. We will have more music. Let us turn… I want you to put the tube of light around yourself through the visualization of this beautiful tube of light descending from your God Presence.
Now everyone in this room had a God presence and everyone should try to contact that God Presence. The Presence is actually in space from seven to seventy feet above your head. That is the focus and reality of your Divine Presence, the I-mage of God, or the I-magic of being. Your I AM Presence.
Now if you’re close to God‑-“Draw nigh unto me, and I will draw nigh unto you,”‑-the Presence is probably only seven or eight or nine or ten feet above your head. But if you’ve gotten away from God, and you’re immersed down here in many things, the Presence retreats, as it is, or withdraws away from the vibratory action of the human and will be found probably as high as seventy feet up in the air above your head. But you can get that high up without going into an airplane just by raising your consciousness up an calling to your Presence. So you go up there and you call to your Presence, and you ask for him to project his tube of light all around you, about nine feet in diameter. This comes down like a waterfall.
Did you ever watch these fireworks or sparklers they have at the fairgrounds during celebrations, brilliant white light? This is a type of action. The presence showers down this radiation around you. And that is not supposed to come down just for a moment. It’s supposed to be there all the time. So we ask to be charged with that protection, be ensealed or enfolded in the tube of light. And then we blaze the violet flame inside.
Now some people use the violet flame first. It won’t hurt you. But if you use the violet flame inside the tube of light, you’re sort of in a capsule. It’s like a space capsule. And you can get rocketed into space this way, too, in consciousness. But you’re sealed or enfolded in this tube of light, locked in it. And the arrows and slings of outrageous fortune (Shakespeare mentions this), cannot penetrate that tube of light. So then, you can call for the violet flame on the inside of it, and you can consume the things in your won world that ought to be consumed.
How many people in this room, when their clothing becomes soiled and no longer fit for use by anyone–instead of giving it to Goodwill where someone‑-where it’s a type of clothing where it’s not in a fit condition to even be repaired–how many of you would keep it? Wouldn’t you burn it or throw it in the furnace? Discard it. If you have things in your world, or I have things in my world, that are not valuable to my salvation or your salvation, shouldn’t we together just throw off these old garments? Cast them to one side? Why should we keep them? Set the elements free, the electrons free, to go back to the heart of the Great Central Sun for repolarization. Why, should we enslave electrons, into patterns of negation? So the violet flame will cut us free.
Now let’s use it together and sing it to the tune of “We Three Kings of the Orient Are.” Do this with fervor and you will receive a reward.

Intensify the action of the violet fire, and it will help you to visualize it if you will look at the violet fire lamp that is here at the altar today. This will give you the correct color and the eye-picture of the violet flame around your self infilling the room.
We’re going to experiment today and actually do an act of service to the world. The world has many old records in it, and these records ought to be burned up. If you want to find these records, you go to a jail‑-yes go to a jail‑-and you’ll find plenty of records there of the dregs of humanity. Or go to court, you’ll find then there. If you don’t get sinking feelings in the pit of your stomach, whether you’re up there as a witness for someone else or just as a spectator, you try it. I hope you don’t, but if you question my judgment, you go sometime. Go to an old folks’ home where people are reviewing etherically all of the events of their life, looking back into their childhood, reliving experiences and waiting too go. If you don’t think that they need violet fire to cut themselves free from all that, to have the feeling of buoyancy and of youth, the divine feeling of eternal life and immortality – well, you sure will when you get there.
This is what none of us should have around ourselves. We should not be surrounded with the records of death. We should have hope. After all, as one of the great orators of all time said, concerning life, he says: don’t be afraid of life, you’ll ne…, of this world, he says, you’ll never get out of it alive anyway. And it is true. So…
But it isn’t true either, you see. The idea is that you have immortal life. Well so did Barrabas, and Iscariot, and so did Hitler. But who’d you rather change places with, Jesus Christ or Adolf Hitler? Christ or Barrabas? It’s one thing to have immortal life and another thing to use immortal life in the employment of ennobling your fellow man and yourself as God intended.
You can’t gild a lily, you know. It’s very beautiful as it is. And so if you just let the immortal lily of your pure Christ consciousness shine forth in all of its cosmic purity, you’re doing a great service to life. But when you try to gild that lily, you cover it with paint as some of the florists are doing now with a lot of the natural flowers, and hunks of metal and all types of things. What are you doing to it? It’s no longer a flower as God made it. This time we do not have cut flowers. The master pointed out to us that if we had cut flowers for this service‑-it’s harvest service of gratitude‑-the little elementals would be cut off from the source of their energy from the earth. And so we have these beautiful little flower pots at the end, you see. And they’re still linked to sweet Mother Earth, and so the elementals are with them there. And some of you may have the chance to see them before this class is over.
There is a great sweetness in the idea of life manifesting in the elemental world as flowers and as fruit, the fruit of the earth. Of course, with the fruit it’s a little different situation. You can’t eat the daisies, you know, but you can eat the fruit of the earth.
Let us give this 5.02, “More Violet Fire”, and as you give it, let us see this room as a tank of concentrated violet fire. We’ve got so much violet fire here this morning that we’re going to be able to saturate the earth to the depth of about six feet all the way around the earth. We’re going to send a tidal wave of violet fire from this room. We’ll start it from the East and we’re going to send it to the West, send it to the west coast, to California, across the Pacific, the Philippines, Hawaii, Japan, sweep across the Russian steppes and around the world, come back through Europe and Great Britain, the isles of the sea, the Isle of Malta, across the Atlantic Ocean to Cuba and then to the coast, the eastern coast and back to Washington. Let’s do this in consciousness and give the world the blessing of the violet flame from this place today. Together. This is from beloved Hilarion. Thank you. [Audience laughs.] That’s so we can see the violet fire better.

Let’s follow that up by “Decree for Freedom’s Holy Light” which is right across the page. And this was written by beloved Lord Gautama and beloved Saint Germain. Let us determine to stop the negative actions of mankind, the destructive activities that have occurred in the Washington area and through other part of our world recently, which are a result of the riptides of human energies of negation which‑-thank you‑-which are being imposed upon mankind.
They’re very white lights. Where’d you get those? Are those new?
Student: They are new.
MLP: You bought them new. Are they heat lamps?
Student: No, but they can see the violet fire much better now.
MLP: Well, this is true. We’ve had the other ones for four or five years and these new ones that we bought just brand new, these are the ones Morya was telling about that the manufacturers make to last so many hours and so that they can get more money out of you by having them burn out. They’re timed to burn out, you see. That’s the general idea. Instead of making things to last, it seems like we’re getting to an area now where everything is timed, you see. They want your cars, your clothes and everything to wear out.
They test the tensile strength of materials with their machines, not to make things to last and endure, but to make them so that they break quickly. This is the Babylonian skill of our merchants who want to sack the world instead of improve the world. And they don’t realize it, that this is not really a good idea at all.
It seems good on the surface to them; it seems like good business. So let’s blast that, too, while we’re at it. 5.01 “Decree for Freedom’s Holy Light.” We’ll have the light of freedom whether we have our electric light or not. But I sure like that triangle. This leaves me with Morya’s triangle, the three dots‑-one up there for God on high and then the down here in the plane; you have a triangle the same as you’re wearing on you. Do you realize that? I’m looking at a triangle here with three lights left.
I remember several years ago one time, the master Jesus walked down the aisle and put the light out over his picture. And I said, why did you do that? And he said, I am the light of the world. [Audience laughs.] Cause I saw him put it out. Saw him walk down the aisle and saw him reach up and just touch it like that with his hand, and the light went right out over picture. And it startled me because I thought, why would he do a thing like that? First I thought; oh it was just an accident, the bulb burned out. But it was no accident. It was intended. Let’s decree.
Do you remember Longfellow’s poem “The Village Blacksmith”? Well, we have a cosmic blacksmith. The thoughtform for the year, of course, is a golden anvil for the Golden Age, which signifies the gold of spiritual accomplishment. And it must come about through noble efforts.
Lord Gautama gave us this concept in the thoughtform for the year in the January conference, or the Christmas class.
We’re scheduled for class instruction at 11:00. It is five minutes to eleven. We will have our beloved Elizabeth spell me off and give a little break here before I give the class instruction. So she will give a few, I prefer not more than ten minutes, because we want to stay on schedule, but I think we’ll continue after that without a break. In other words, we’ll have these decrees and then I’ll go in the class instruction.
God and the Great White Brotherhood
We ask the LORD’s blessing upon you all as we break the bread of communion with the sacred word. When you received your program for this Harvest Feast of Gratitude, you will take note of our Lord the Maha Chohan’s message. I would like to use that as a keynote for this morning’s instruction, in part. He says:
Gracious ones, no finer hour comes to any man than that of victory. The long hours of preparation, the disappointments, the patience required to hold the balance in the midst of turbulence and even the strength to honestly submit one’s own pattern of living for honest reappraisal, these are all forgotten when the finish line is crossed. I call to your attention that mankind’s days of testing in all their occasional bitterness can never be considered compensatory for the weight of glory that is the lot of each overcoming victor.
Now when the sheer lightweight of man’s many blessings is considered it should be apparent to all that an extra ordinary opportunity to offer gratitude to the Deity is in order. The American shrine of Plymouth Rock is a landmark of some significance, telling of bygone days when Ascended Master love preparing, pared the simple society to be the mighty forerunner of our beautiful America for which Saint Germain has labored so tirelessly. Yet so much remains to be externalized of Divine Perfection.
Remember when work seems slow or tedious that the early American colonists did produce, by stint of honest labor, much of the everyday necessities which mankind currently take so for granted. And in the very weaving of their clothes the hum could be heard of the women spinning a lullaby hymn to God for the many blessings they shared.
So, I say now in the name of the blessed Holy Spirit to all devotees of Divine Truth who desire to express their love in a holy assembly of mutual gratitude to the Deity in this present year, come let us gather together to ask the LORD’s blessing.
The mounting tempo of each class from the first unto the present one is a source of wonder and joy to all who have ever been partakers of our cup of blessing to the world, to the Summit Lighthouse. This magnificent concept of beloved El Morya of the Darjeeling Council bears perennial tidings of goodwill to men and women of every faith in the name of the universal one God for He is the sustaining source of all power to those who understand and enter into the vibratory action of God’s Will from the Ascended Masters’ level. Here freedom of expression is always given pre‑eminence and, thereby, Godliness is increased by the power of holy truth and in the fullness of the spirit of pure love which ever knits together the entire body of Christ’s servers upon the planet as a singular manifestation of the Holy Spirit in action.
It is characteristic of the Holy Spirit that it rushes forth like a wind blowing where it wishes and bringing to all who receive it in the spirit of gratitude, the continuing wonders of divine revelation.
As we renew our bond with many of you on this auspicious occasion and feast of gratitude, remember that it is to be wholly dedicated to the ever rising purposes of the Great Brotherhood whose every guardian action has brought untold blessings and protection to the planet and its people. Not the least of these blessings is to be found in the faithful themselves who, although yet unascended, see in each gathering the opportunity for further regeneration and that holy contemplation in which the shared coals from the altars of heaven suffuse the glow which lights the whole world.
In the bonds of the Holy Spirit I AM
The Lord Maha Chohan.
I wanted to renew the covenant of the Maha Chohan with each of you and let you hear his precious words. And so it was our desire to read them this morning, for we would like in this class instruction to say some word concerning the Great White Brotherhood.
In the scriptures it is recorded that, “Heaven is my throne and earth is my footstool,” and then one asks, “Where is thy abiding place?” and God speaks in this wise, “I dwell in the side of the North.”
When we first contemplate this idea of the LORD dwelling in the side of the North it may seem to us very enigmatic. It is as though it was a deliberate riddle, like the riddle of the sphinx, posed to make us think and conjure up a solution which would differ. One person having one concept and one another. Such is not the case.
Polarity, the north star, is used in astronomical calculations and by mariners at sea to find their bearings and so when God speaks saying, “I dwell in the side of the North,” He refers to the accuracy of the nature of being, the clarity of His own consciousness and His availability to be found as the true and only rightful guide for all mankind. And this is wholly reasonable for illumination and wisdom are a very great part of God.
We cannot take one aspect of God or of Being and sever that from the rest without taking into account that it came forth as a part of the whole. Whenever you separate a quality, I’ve had people say to me, “Why God would not do that, God is a God of Love,” and this was in a case of resentment against something that they felt that God had done. But I could very well have pointed out to them, “Yes, He is a God of Love, but God is also a God of Justice.”
And so when we study the nature of God or the nature of Being, we must recognize that He does not alone possess one quality but all the ideal qualities of being. He is just and wise, and kind and true, immortal and eternal, all loving, all powerful, and all these qualities and many more, but God never made known a single quality to man that man could not imitate if he would. Our free will and our right and the righteousness of our imitation of God or of Christ is something that in itself is a great gift to our being.
What a privilege it is that the Most High who dwelleth in the side of the North, who taketh the side of man’s direction, to direct the orderly physical universe, nature, the cosmos, and also the destiny of man, that this is the dwelling place of God shows that He is very close to His creation which He hath made and, therefore, identifies with that creation. If we permit this concept to permeate our being, it will wrought a magnificent change in that being.
So long as we feel discombobulated, so long as we feel that we are disconnected and are not a part of God, but we function in a position where God will be our judge of every act that we do and we look as Saint Paul did at ourselves and we say, “I find the law at work in my members, a law of iniquity causing me to do wrong on one hand and I find another law of life working in my members.” As long as we are functioning in a dual consciousness, part of ourselves being at war with another part of ourselves, where are we? We become rather confused. But the moment we recognize that the sole reality of being is manifest in our Divine Presence and that that Presence is our reality and we realize we are not a pumpkin creation, a footstool kingdom, we’re not just fruit, we’re not inert substance, we have been given the highest consciousness of God.
“And I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until I drink it new with you in the kingdom of heaven.” The Christ drank the precious fruit of the vine with his apostles the night of his betrayal saying, “One of you shall betray me.” The role of Iscariot is one that all men have partaken of as much as they have the role of the disciple or the apostle, for whenever we are cruel to one another, whenever we speak ill of one another, whenever we look at anyone on earth with eyes of superior intent we are betraying the Christ of ourselves and of that one. But this is not a type of betrayal that should bring about condemnation. Saint Paul recognized the old habit patterns of the world and he said, “I find ‑———- law working in my members,” which works against the Christ.
It is then necessary that we be not distracted by the working of the law in our members, but that we be attracted by the great power of the dwelling place of God in the side of the North, in the Polestar of our being, that we let the power of Light attraction direct us rather than the quivering and quavering consciousness that is always fearful and speaks unto God and sayeth in this wise, “Oh God I know you’re a hard man, you’re very hard, you often reap where you never sowed and you’re very powerful and I’m only a poor little mortal down here. I’m not too strong physically compared to this one or that one, or I don’t have a lot of money, or I don’t have a lot of power or, only a few friends and so I took the talent that you gave me and I put it in a napkin and I buried it in the earth here. Now I’ve got everything you gave me and I’m going to give all of that back to you because I kept it just the way you gave it to me.” “Depart from me ye worker of iniquity into everlasting fire.”
Oh, now what’s happening? Is this God then, this God of Love, casting this person into outer darkness? He created them. They’re a poor little weak quivering person. They haven’t used the talent that God gave them. They put it in a napkin and hid it. They’re returning to Him that which He has. Here is the God that speaks saying, “Thou who hast ten talents, thou hast done well with thy ten talents, I say, take this talent from the one who did not use it and give it to the one who hath ten, for to everyone that hath more shall be added and to him that hath not shall be taken away.” What type of justice is this we say, until we realize that the law is being fulfilled to raise and elevate the poor quivering man into a god.
The outer darkness and the gnashing of teeth is symbolical of man ground under the wheel of karma, for when men refuse to pay heed to the laws of God they must come under the law of universal karma and be judged accordingly. How can it be otherwise? Naturally there is darkness there and there is wailing and naturally if they don’t understand the Deity, if they don’t understand His Absolute Goodness, they are going to be judged by the god that they understand.
The god of their world, then, is not the Universal God. It is like an individual god, a race god. It is an idol that they have set up and yet they are judged by those standards, for if men see God as cruel, as wicked, as unjust, are they not inclined themselves to model after that which they see that God is, or they think God is?
What then is the true nature of God in His relationship to man? We who know the I AM Presence, the being of existence, realize that God is absolutely good, absolutely pure, and kind, and holy and would gladly give all things of Himself to man immediately. Yet all we need to do is to look at the history of this time to see that man cannot be trusted with unlimited power. How many people do you know or have you known in your life who were little simple people that either got a great deal of money or were raised in a position and became the greatest of tyrants? You’ve heard of the ‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑, those who were suddenly swept into a fortune who do not know how to use it but seem to suppose that this fortune must sever them from their friends, that they can no longer associate with their old friends because their friends don’t have money as they now do. They forget their early beginnings.
And what difference does it make really? What is riches and honor and fame in the eyes of God? It is swept away between two heartbeats. The only thing that really counts is the realization of who we are and our gradual recognition that we have a rate of progress that we can move into.
Stultification, standing still, is the greatest of sin. To bury your talent in a napkin, to trust that you’re not good enough to do something with your talent, this is a great mistake. God has given to every one of you in this room some great talent or more.
I think one of the secrets of success and I mean the secret of success of the Summit Lighthouse, has been the magnificent participation of our membership in the activities of the organization and their intensification and use of their talents for the glory of God and to help their fellow man where ever they can.
And yet they are not fools. People of this activity who have the right understanding, understand that you cannot take a million dollars and give it to a tramp. You must give to mankind some sense of worth of the fact that their life has worth and you must teach them how to employ their life as God intended so that they can receive for themselves that which no man can take from them. You could confer and even division of all the money of this land among the people and in many cases it would soon be in the hands of the same people again and those who do not have it would not have it again because it is a karmic condition that they must master and overcome. Life has a means of teaching us.
Now I’ve talked about you. Let us talk about the Brotherhood. In the theme of the Good Shepherd, the Christ, we see a most magnificent concept for this age. “All men like sheep have gone astray. There is none righteous, no not one,” is the thundering tones of Romans from Paul. “None righteous, no not one, they have all departed and become workers of iniquity.” When I first read that my heart thumped and I said, “Can it be?” I realize now that all of the scriptures must be taken “cum grantel salis” with a grain of salt.
Extremism in the world today, which is quite a political issue, makes us realize that we have in the world many religious extremists, people on the fringe areas of religion‑‑to the right or to the left‑‑who do not understand all that they know about their own faith or anyone else’s faith but would lead you to believe that they are the wisest people on earth and this is always an action of the ego.
We know and I think you have heard me say it, those of you who know me well, many times, that I am fully aware in the outer and the human octave of the many things I do not know which I think would make a much bigger book than that which I know. But I am not at all of the same opinion as that concerning my Presence or the gift of God which He giveth to me and which He giveth to thee. I believe in that gift and I believe that if I do not know the answer to something that is necessary to know that God does and that He has the means to communicate it to me at the right time and the right place.
Now when we start thinking of the sheep, I would like to have you realize that the world, the whole world, is like that. They’re like a great flock of sheep. Have you ever noticed that all the way from little lambs the sheep are in different stages of growth? This is true of people. We have the old, I don’t even know enough about sheep to tell you what they are, but these are the old, the older sheep. What do they call them now? [Voice from audience] Bellwether is the word I wanted. Thank you, you’ve served your purpose. [Audience laughs] Bellwether, that’s a good, a very good, that’s apolitical figure isn’t it? We have these old hands, these old heads among the animal kingdom that actually lead the sheep, the flock when the shepherd is not there. Then we have the little lambs that run astray in the thickets and get caught and bleat.
We have many stages of consciousness here in the human octave and as far as segregation is concerned, you have the greatest segregation in the world manifesting in the states of consciousness which people have imposed upon themselves. Is that clear to you? I mean people have an idea that they are a certain thing. They may be that or they may not be that but they sure do segregate themselves, people, into all kinds of classes and the masses, whereas, it’s not at all important what rate of progress you’re manifesting if you’re making progress and that is what is important.
You see if we could measure people’s spiritual progress by how much money they had in the bank and the goal was one million dollars and some people here had two cents and others had nine hundred and ninety‑nine thousand dollars and some had all the rates in between, as long as the people with the two cents were adding a few dollars each year to their amount and if they had forever to live they’d eventually get the million dollars, you see. So we realize you’d have some graduating rather rapidly cause this is the way it is, whereas, some would have longer to go and that’s the way the world is. They have a certain state of consciousness.
Was it not Sir James Jeans who said that we must take people as they are in their state of consciousness and not expect too much of them? This is one, of course, of the problems of our time, that many people expect a great deal of everyone. They expect people to live up to their own understanding of perfection. People cannot do this and so the Great White Brotherhood in its magnificent wisdom has acted as a guardian presence to the mankind of earth and to the various divisions of consciousness by functioning and using spiritual power and when necessary, even material power so that they can protect mankind from himself and from his own depredations.
Take the atomic bomb. The Brotherhood deliberately withheld, utilizing every means at their disposal, much of the knowledge that gave man the power to use the atomic bomb because they felt that this infant civilization was not yet ready to be trusted with so frightful a power and a weapon. However the wheels of universal progress and order move on. There is nothing, no power, even the Masters cannot stop the cycle from being fulfilled and when the fullness of time came about that the idea was waiting to be born the discoveries were made and the atomic bomb became a reality of our time. A frightful reality, but it existed long before we knew it and yet the Masters knew it long before we did.
And there are other discoveries forthcoming, but the greatest peril of our age lies in the fact that we have discovered so much, as Zadkiel pointed out recently, of a material nature understanding how to wrest the secrets from nature, and so little about the nature of man.
I can draw now upon my own experience for a moment. I remember when I was in the business world and dealing with big business men in different parts of this country that I found that when nothing else would work to try to get to them to sell them an idea or a concept. Flattery would work and I was not disposed to flatter, therefore, my success was somewhat limited until I finally decided inside of my own heart that there must be something good in everyone that I could praise.
So I began to search and became quite facile, if you will forgive me for this left or right‑handed compliment to myself, in digging out from some of these men various things that I could praise justly without compromising my own conscience, for I refused absolutely to praise them or flatter them just for the sake of my own good. I do not like a dishonest person. I did not wish to be one. Well I found that I did have a much greater success after I found some little thing that I could praise in them and I was amazed at how great orders for thousands of dollars could be secured just through telling someone that you were pleased to see that they had won a tennis match so many years age in college. And you saw their little loving cup on their mantle or on their desk and would listen to them tell you about this loving cup.
What does it mean, I asked myself since as I look back on this? It means that most of these people think that the very sun, moon and stars rise in their own ego, in themselves. They actually think that the universe revolves around their own world and the disturbing thing to them, then, is that when they come to pass on they find out that now they can no longer command nature and the universe to stand still and that they are being exited by the Prompter and this often becomes a problem to them emotionally. And sometimes when people become critically ill their mind slips because they cannot imagine what the world is going to be without them here anymore.
Well I can’t imagine what the world would be without God but I have seen a great deal of man in a few short years and I realize that man’s greatest hope lies in God. Everything that is noble that I have ever discovered in men has been as a result of their attunement with God and the great Masters whether they knew it or not.
Now we have in Hollywood, and I’m skipping around here in order to touch upon many subjects, a man that is known to you and to myself, to most of the world. He’s no stranger. I refer to Walt Disney. This man, of course, has been extremely successful and has made millions and millions of dollars which he has put into Disneyland for enjoyment of children. A magnificent portrayal and presentation of scientific achievement used on behalf of the youth and also of the adult world. You remember how Khrushchev, himself, was almost disappointed to the point that he puckered up his lip and cried because they wouldn’t allow him to see Disneyland? Well the same thing, of course, applies to most of us if we got to California and didn’t go to see Disneyland. We might feel, we’d be disappointed, especially if we’d already seen it. I managed to get there when the gate had closed so I just looked at it and got in the car and drove away, so I still have this joy coming if God wills it.
But here is a man, Walt Disney, who has given America wholesome pictures about animals, about people, about things that do not tear down the youth of the world.
I’m going to give you a practical example here of the Great White Brotherhood in action. The Great White Brotherhood knows the laws of God as none of us on this planet know. They know that you give a child a thoughtform of a gun or a dagger or a sword or human viciousness and anger in drama or on the stage and that child is going to copy it in his play and games. The Brotherhood knows that as a man sees so he eventually thinks, for the power of the eye to capture an image is great and the mind is also great to retain. These images then become thoughtforms, which like attracts like, and the youth of the world constantly exposed to television programs and comic strips in which murders and threats are being hurled at one individual or another are naturally going to grow up with certain elements of hostility somewhere in the back of their brain and being. And when they get into the adult world and they find they cannot manipulate the world the way they would like to do, naturally they stand up here and begin to pull out their bag of tricks and they slip out sometime before they know their slip is showing. Just like that. They get very angry and then they try to justify their anger. They try to justify their conduct.
Now I could go into this at length but what point. I’m trying to bring out here that there is a definite impact, an influence on the youth of the world and upon you all and upon all of us by the thoughtforms of the things we see and that we permit our mind and consciousness to dwell on.
Mr. Disney has amplified, of course, he has some element of drama and cruelty in his pictures this is true, but they are head and shoulders above the average work that comes out of Hollywood. They do bring about a greater sense of wholesomeness.
Now here is how the Brotherhood works. When a man like Mr. Disney starts out on his career, the Great White Brotherhood often overshadows such a man. He may not know a thing about the Masters. On the other hand, he may be very, very skillful in knowledge of the Masters but it’s not important to the Brotherhood whether he knows it or whether he doesn’t. Naturally they would prefer that he knew it, but if he does not, they can still overshadow him. ‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑ various movement of our land or world.
The Brotherhood attempts in its many departments and avenues to reach all segments of our society. There is a specialized branch that works with suicide. There is a specialized branch that works with entities and entity control. There is a specialized branch that works with incoming children. There is another branch that works with the departing and arranges to have people meet the departing at the terminals, as it were, as though they were coming out of a train station. When the change takes place they try to arrange to have certain beings there and the Great Ones to receive these people and lift them out of the astral consciousness into the Light and get them away from all the destructive elements that they’ve lived in for so long so they can get into the schools of Light and be God taught in preparation for either their next embodiment or if they’re worthy, they’re taken to Luxor to the temple of our Beloved Serapis Bey.
And so I would like to tell you in connection with this address that on the same evening of the passing of our beloved Christel Anderson from the screen of life, she was taken to Luxor by eleven o’clock that evening. At five o’clock that afternoon she had an appointment, more or less, to have dinner here in the Dodge House with her good friend, and our good friend from Oklahoma, from Tulsa, Ruth Farnam, who is here in the room. At five o’clock Ruth was made aware of Christel very strongly, but Christel was in Atlanta and had just passed on into the other world, but by eleven o’clock that evening she was in the halls of Luxor in Serapis’ Temple.
And it is a most interesting thing, then, when we consider the various branches of the Great White Brotherhood and the magnificent way they work. There is even a branch of the Brotherhood that deals with finance and this group worked a great deal with Saint Germain in Europe and the crowned heads of Europe. They knew very well that even the supply of their worldly goods depended to a degree on their cooperation with the Hierarchy. That time the Brotherhood worked through the diplomatic channels and they tried, many times, they even tried to prevent catastrophes from happening.
For example, the great plague that came into France and parts of Europe there. They tried to stay that plague. Now if Saint Germain had been listened to and the Great Ones had been heeded, the plague would have been stopped. He did stop it, finally, but the point is that mankind have free will and they do not have to listen to the Masters or anyone else. You don’t have to listen to me even, and yet you’re in the room. You can put cotton in your ears or you don’t have to listen to anybody. We do it of our own free will and when the Great Ones speak we don’t have to listen to them or if God speaks in our hearts we don’t have to listen to Him. He won’t compel us to listen. It must come about because we want to. And so the Brotherhood continued to whisper to the people all over the world the right things they should do but the world did not always listen.
But now I’m going to tell you something that you probably don’t know. Where a large number of people are involved and the fate of a nation hangs in the balance, the free will of man can be interfered with. The Masters and the Brotherhood have at times interfered.
The Germans have a saying that goes like this, “The trees only grow so tall.” This refers to the curbing action of the Great Law. Now if there were no curbing action at all, God proposes and man disposes, or man proposes and God disposes, you can have it any way you want to. How would it be if the dispositions of God were not accepted by man as they are not many times? Should the universe crumble because two or three people wanted it to? What would happen if all of you were given the power over the rain and the rains came and half of you decided you wanted sunshine? You’d either balance each other out or cancel it out. You’d have a kind of a nether world of neither sunshine or rain or you’d have all rain or all sunshine. There has to be a balance in nature.
The Masters then are permitted, and Saint Germain and the Great White Brotherhood have interfered on occasion with the free will of man where it was given in order to prevent catastrophe. However, this is always done by dispensation to the Karmic Board, and because they grant it once does not mean they are always disposed to grant it the next time. They do not have to grant it. They are under no compulsion. They do it usually out of mercy and they go right to the heart of God and God is still the final authority no matter what anybody would like to tell you to the contrary.
But it is the will of God that is reflected in the Great White Brotherhood. God has actually turned over, and He always did, His authority to those who were able, for this is the whole concept of Hierarchy. How are you going to inherit the kingdom of God, and the meek shall inherit the earth, if there’s nothing for you to inherit and you don’t have a consciousness to inherit it? When the LORD speaks and says you shall inherit the earth, He means that.
But who can inherit the earth? The meek. Why, who are the meek? He’s not referring to the meek at all in the ordinary sense, cause these meek are very strong. What He means is that it’s not going to be by might or by power. These people who are power‑mad, and power‑crazy, who want to take the world and dominate the world by force and everyone around them, they are not meek and they will not inherit the earth. These are the rebellious spirits that have made a mess of things as it is right now and would like to have you and the entire world enslaved and keep you that way.
God wants you to enter into your own freedom, the freedom of the Holy Spirit, that freedom which makes of men and women true brothers. Not for our purposes alone. Not just for the Summit Lighthouse, but for the kingdom of God, for the world, for the universe.
I remember as a boy of playing alone on my back porch, ten o’clock in the morning, and looking up through the clouds and seeing the sun peeking through. And I remember of a communication coming from on high to me in the form of an awareness of other worlds. I knew, no one had to tell me. I didn’t even know geography at the time. I didn’t know what state I was in except that it was Wisconsin but I didn’t know where it was in relation to the rest of the states. I had an idea, but much later when I was, I think I was probably only five or six but I was aware of other worlds and I was aware of knowledge that is beyond Harvard University, by far. I did not have the language to clothe this knowledge but I knew and I knew that I knew, and I think many of you have had similar experiences in part or maybe greater by far but at least some of you I know have from personal anecdotes and things you have told me.
We must be aware, then, that the Hierarchy, the Great White Brotherhood, are only people who came forth from God just as we did. They were born. They lived on earth. They used the ten talents or one talent they had. They mastered their environment. Some of them were sages. Some of them were rulers and kings. Some of them were servants and the greater they were the more humble they were and they entered into dominion over themselves. They kept the citadel of their being. They mastered their own energy, they were not mastered by the world. They became Ascended Beings the same as Jesus did. The very atoms of their flesh not only were transfigured as we were discussing at breakfast but the sacred fire transmuted all the substance in the atoms of their body and the electrons, not in the electrons but around the electrons, drew off that substance until they were shining Light‑-weightless, deathless and immortal. And because Light has no weight, and, of course, I’ve probably mentioned this before, the story about the two morons where one said, “If I turn the flashlight beam up there will you climb up it?” And the other one said, “No, because when I get up to the top you’ll shut the light off.” And that’s the way it goes. I mean in the ascension there’s no shutting off of the Light.
But you are Light and Light is weightless. It can shine to the farthest end of the universe. You can light a candle and I know that there are some of you who have engineering training here and you know that you can light a candle in this room and if there were nothing to cover that light, no matter how far you would go in space the light of that candle would continue to radiate out just as the light of the sun does. It isn’t the size of the fire. Light rays pass on indefinitely into infinite, so when we have Light, regardless of it’s quantity, it’s going out and it’s going out anyway, dear hearts, whether you have Light or not.
If you qualify the Light that’s flowing through you as energy with shadowed substance and fear and negation, you’re pouring that out into the universe. That doesn’t get very far. It stays around this old shell here through the ring pass not and it usually is down here below the fly line of human consciousness and the poor people that have to cope with it are all of us. We all have to handle it. That’s where our tube of light comes in and helps. If we get an opening in the tube of light, something goes through. Then we’ve got a problem, haven’t we, until we handle it.
The Great White Brotherhood are interested in dispersing God’s Laws. They’re interested in guiding mankind. They function through individuals, through groups. We’re not the only group, not by a long shot, but we aim to be the best group there is on earth and not because we want to prove any other group is not, but because we have a right, as every man has a right, to be the best artisan and craftsman of his time. No one has to take a backward seat. No one has to sit back and say, “Oh, I’m not as good as they are.” If you are not satisfied with whatever quality you’re manifesting whether it’s music or art or culture or the art of being a friend or whatever you’re trying to master, you can master anything by drawing the energy from God and the wisdom from God to do it.
But the best thing to remember is that you must understand that the motive is the transfiguring aspect. What is your motive? Ask yourself why. Do you want to be a great pianist because you want to be thought brilliant or do you want to be a great pianist because you can make people happy? If you want to make people happy you would sit in the audience, if you had the power of Tchaikovsky or Chopin or Mendelssohn, and not even reveal yourself unless someone knew that you were a great pianist. You might not say anything at all and then if someone came to you and said, “Would you play?”, you would very graciously consent. You would not refuse to use your talent. You’d go up and you’d use it and you’d make people happy. But you wouldn’t play to be thought wise or brilliant and you wouldn’t practice in order to be thought brilliant. You’d practice in order to practice the art of perfection because you felt that you should use the talent God gave you rightly.
This magnificence has been expressed in every race and in every religion. Some of the religions today that are very popular were once very persecuted. They were looked down upon. They were despised. Their leaders were killed in many fashions and manners but today things have changed.
Yet the Great White Brotherhood always has a few organizations in the vanguard to take care of the people that are not a part of the mass mind, those forerunners of thought who are pilgrims in this world. They have the consciousness that loves their England and their Ireland‑‑our land. They love the land of their birth and their nativity and they love their own people‑‑kith and kin‑‑but they love the freedom of the homeland of heaven and the Ascended Master consciousness more that they do the arm of flesh. And they seek no continuing city here on earth but seek one to come as the pilgrims that set foot on these shores via the medium of the Mayflower which was prophetic of America whose culture “may flower” if the people will let it, anet El Morya, you will then understand that we ourselves have a part to play in this drama.
We’re not fighting the Indians today. We have a few of them here among us. I’m talking about American Indians. We don’t have to be afraid of the arrow that flyeth by day or the pestilence that walketh by night in the ordinary sense. Today they only assassinate your character. That’s all. Today they only try to do things that will bring you to the brink of despair and destroy your purposes and ‑‑‑‑‑‑-‑. But you are the children of the Light. To you it is given to know the mysteries of God.
And so we speak here of many mysterious things which we veil to you. We say them in words in such a manner that they look as though they’re very simple on the surface. To those of you who understand the code and understand inwardly what we’re talking about, this is an act of great illumination and yet those who do not understand it all, inwardly will also receive outwardly a certain manner of upliftment because the Great White Brotherhood direct their work simultaneously.
Take for example the Pearls of Wisdom. The Pearls of Wisdom works something like a tape recorder that is used by some of the national, NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. These tape recorders, some of them have as many as forty tracks on them. You know most of us are familiar with one or two track tape recorders. Stereo has two and four track recorders. When you have forty tracks it’s as though you had forty lines drawn on the blackboard at once or forty levels, and this is the way the Masters work with the Pearls of Wisdom.
There’s a surface track. You read the words and it’s English, it’s not Sanskrit. And there’s another track a little deeper, it looks like it might even be Christianity or Buddhism. You go down a little further and you find Mysticism. You go down a little further and you find something from the Archangels, some Archangelic concept, but you have as many as three, four, five, six, and seven levels in the average Pearl and you may have as many as forty levels. Don’t try to find them, you’d go mad trying, but just take the food for your soul that you get according to the level you function on and that’s the way it is with the Brotherhood. The Masters do not just speak to one level. They are interested in hitting people wherever they are so that they can raise them a little bit step higher in the peerage.
You know we’ve got a roomful of countesses and counts here. Saint Germain was called the Count. That’s because he counted. Now if you want to count… [Audience laughs] who’s laughing? Did I say something funny? Well you can stand up and be counted too. You see, last night you stood up, now but today you’re not standing up when I gave you the cue. But I’m still smiling at you.
I have to say a word or two to our girls from California. [Voice inaudible] Oh, I didn’t mean to. Oh, it took the starch out of you to be alone. But you were not alone, you were with all of us. She recognized, she felt so compelled with the Maha Chohan and she was in the front row. She did the same thing that I did once, years ago. I once raised my hand when I should have kept it down because I thought everybody behind had their hand up and I was the only one. [Voice inaudible] That’s right. She felt such gratitude to the Maha Chohan that she wanted to stand up and she thought everybody else was standing up and in the middle of an address. I can’t very well do anything myself to tell people to sit up or stand up or whatever I want them to do. I have to keep on going, you see. So that’s the way it was.
Getting back to these other things, we’re about to the end of this lecture. I want to point out that there is a reason for everything. This is a truism but it’s one that, like all other truisms, must be used as a cuneiform. You know what a cuneiform is in the case? Well, you use, you use a cuneiform when you decorate your cakes. You fill them with a little sweet frosting, colored frosting, and then you put a little star on the end and you screw it on, you know. And you push and out comes this substance molded the way you designed it, you see, the way you wanted it to. And you decorate the cake. And many of these truisms are that way. They are only a mold that helps you to understand life a little better. We need guidelines because we’re yet children. We are learning to write in a spiritual manner.
Now I could have revealed, today, as I have in some of the previous lectures a great deal of the inner workings of the Brotherhood, but I was directed today to bring this discourse forth which has been brought forth and as an obedient child, I have spoken as I was directed because the Master has said to me that it is not what we know but what we do that counts most. And today the crying need is for more right action. We already have been given a great deal of right knowledge, therefore, I appeal to all of you to recognize that the Brotherhood’s continuing right action is a blow against not only social but individual imperfection because God has put us here in order that we might work out our own salvation with fear and trembling.
The Creation was made perfect, but at inner levels. The outer level of consciousness was given to man so that he could have the wisdom to choose, in this conscious state, between evil and good. And as he chooses the good he is raised and he becomes illustrious.
So all that we have received and all that we ever will receive comes through the Hierarchy. The Hierarchy, as I’ve said before, were once just as we are and we will one day be a part of that as we fit ourselves ready for the Kingdom and that’s a worthy office.
You know, God may keep on making worlds like ours for all eternity and He needs overseers and it’s a little better position to be up there looking down here and helping train a recalcitrant humanity than it is to be down here and be a part of the mess. But that’s where we are‑‑looking up. May we one day be up looking down to help others. But the beauty of it is we can still help them right now because we have a very lofty philosophy given to us, a very lofty ideal of perfection and we are not bereft of reason nor faith, nor power, nor grace, nor kindness, nor strength, nor love of light, nor purity, or the essence of completion. We have the essence of completion right within our God Flame within. And we can complete the work of being master builders in the temple of God.
The Christ is the cornerstone of this temple of Light and the Brotherhood functions to all people. We simply seek to express the summit of our existence. We advocate Summit conferences and Summit conferments. Summit conferences because we believe that we can talk and negotiate with people of all faiths in every walk of life. Summit conferments because we believe that from the summit of man’s being all grace is conferred upon that which is below and in the state of becoming, so I pray that I may be raised up also with you all in the fulfillment of that destiny which is our common aim. When you come to Holy Tree House on Sunday for our Fireside get‑together, we will show you some of the progress that has been made.
Now I am through with the lecture part. I have probably two or three minutes more, I’d like to talk informally to you. The Summit Lighthouse would like to present to you our good friend, William Harper. Will you please come up to the front here? You can come back here. This is only made sacred by our devotion and you have a lot of devotion and service you have rendered to the Light.
I want to announce to you that as the Bishop of this movement some time ago I conferred upon William Harper the title of Reverend and, therefore, he is to be known from now on as Reverend Harper. [Audience claps] This is permissible in as much as we are a church. I do not use these titles a great deal but it is a matter of service to the Masters and the Great Ones. He’s rendered a tremendous service and as this is the Harvest Class, I want to express my gratitude to his mother who is present here and to the Great Ones for the magnificent service and devotion that he has rendered hour after hour after hour serving by the side of the late Christel Anderson. Between the two of them, they have made it possible for the material which flowed through me from the Great Ones to go out into the field. Thank you again and God bless you.

Who is the Great White Brotherhood?
A spiritual order of Western saints and Eastern adepts who have reunited with the Spirit of the living God and who comprise the heavenly hosts. They have transcended the cycles of karma and rebirth and ascended (accelerated) into that higher reality which is the eternal abode of the soul. The word “white” refers not to race but to the aura (halo) of white light surrounding their forms.
The ascended masters of the Great White Brotherhood, united for the highest purposes of the brotherhood of man under the Fatherhood of God, have risen in every age from every culture and religion to inspire creative achievement in education, the arts and sciences, God-government and the abundant Life through the economies of the nations. The Brotherhood also includes in its ranks certain unascended chelas of the ascended masters. Jesus Christ revealed this heavenly order of saints “robed in white” to his servant John in Revelation.
Purpose
The Great White Brotherhood’s primary function is to return mankind’s consciousness to the liberty of Oneness through the spreading abroad of an understanding of cosmos—the unerring Laws that govern the cycles and destiny of the microcosm (man) and the Macrocosm (his true home of Light).
Founding
The idea of the Brotherhood was born in the mind of God through the universal Christ consciousness who was the Logos, the pure Light of the Great White Way. God the Father could not behold evil nor look upon iniquity, but through the Christ, he was in touch with every situation in the universe. The Christ-intelligence endowed the Father’s concept with the tangible Reality of the Great White Brotherhood. Thus was born the seamless garment of the universal Christ consciousness.
The Brotherhood is the hope of every man. It is God’s plan for the orderly expression of his love. It is his provision for the raising of the individual through the raising of the whole, as well as for the raising of the whole through the raising of the individual. It is an effective means whereby God reaches out secretly to perform his wonders of deliverance and his miracles of salvation to a world that has departed the path of righteousness.
Although spiritual in origin, the Great White Brotherhood maintains a very real contact with people on the earth today. Higher initiates are quite aware of their contact with the Brotherhood, whereas lesser initiates work and serve without any conscious knowledge of the contact. The Great White Brotherhood functions also on other planets and in other systems of worlds.
Membership
The members of this spiritual fraternity represent the Godhead as rays of light flooding forth from the sun, each one carrying an aspect of the Creator’s consciousness and making it practical to embodied souls. The members are not permitted to divulge their membership—even to other members. They may, however, acknowledge service under the direction of the masters of the Great White Brotherhood.
One of the best-known members of the Great White Brotherhood is the Ascended Master Jesus the Christ, whose Galilean ministry was a magnificent manifestation and fulfillment of centuries of intense preparation and millennia of divine intent. The higher initiates of the Brotherhood are known as “the Lords of the Flame.”
